    József Attila Memorial Museum

Attila József (1905-1937) was the most significant and the best known poet of the 20th century in Hungary. His poems have been translated into many languages around the globe.
The Memorial Museum is in the former Horváth Inn in the cottage area of Balatonszárszó, where he spent his last few weeks, before his death. (November - December 1937)
Legend, but no fact, says that he presumably committed a suicide. However the latest researches proved that the poet was the victim of an accident.
From 1957, the Memorial Museum has an exhibition presenting the life of the poet. Since the National Literal Museum does not have any Attila József exhibition, this display has a great significance.

April 11, the birthday of Attila József is simultaneously the Day of the Hungarian Poetry since 1964; his statue was inaugurated on the lake shore in 1996.

For the poem-lovers some rows from one of his last poems:

    "Upon my thirty-second year -
what a surprise, this poem here,
    knicky-
    knacky:

a little gift with which I say,
    lurking alone in this café:
    happy
    happy.

    Thirty-two years just blew away,
I never made ten doits a day:
    hungry,
    Hungary.

A pedagogue I might have been,
    not this pen-busting, might-have-been,
    saddie
    laddie." ......... and so on

Who wants to eat good and cheap should visit the buffets in the harbour, where it is possible to choose from the most various foods.

Favorite Dish: I would call attention to three places especially:
The hamburger shop is open around the clock, so there is no trouble if you get hungry after a party late in the night,
The waffle, diverse delicate waffles are baked and real raspberry syrup is sold, with real raspberry pieces.
The baked fish, is very tasty and cheap, price for 10 dkg about HUF 200 - 250.

"Cuki" confectionery, is not in the harbour, but not far from it, located on Gábor Áron street. The Surprise de Somló fantastic, very delicate their strudels and the water ice is made of real fruit.

M7 has reached My Holiday house at the Lake Balaton
The 14 kilometre sections of the Motorway between Balatonszárszó and Zamárdi, together with the Kõröshegy viaduct was opened for traffic on 8 August 2007, so the transit traffic on the southern coast completly avoids the coastal settlements. The viaduct almost two kilometres long, its tallest dot 88 metres. Also the new section for all vehicle categories subject to fees.

Balatonföldvár lies just several hundred meters from the outskirt of Balatonszarszo in eastern direction and it is totaly assembled with its eastern neighbour Szantod.
The city was purpose-built as a holiday resort at the end of the 19th century and from this reason it is the most orderly settlement on the lakeside.
Its wonderful parks, and masterfully planned streets and promenades show the fine taste of the most progressive Hungarian aristocratic families, the Széchenyis, and also the technique of the planner and engineer István Spur, who later became Government Commissioner for the Balaton.
The resort also boasts the finest harbour of the lake. International sail competitions have been held very often here.

Favorite thing: On the southern shore you will find a beautiful 50 miles long beach, an uninterrupted line of large and small resorts teeming with life, a paradise for fans of sun and water, particularly families with small children. The particular benefit for children is the very gradual incline meaning that in most places children of even the youngest ages can walk out for 100 m or more before they get out of their depth. The average temperature of the water is 26-30C.

Fondest memory: The summer season at Lake Balaton lasts from the second half of May till the first half of September.
