Eger Castle by Paul2001 The castle in Eger was built in the 13th century to defend the town against the Mongols who had been invading the region in the earlier part of that century. They had departed before the castle had been built but the castle was instead put to good use when the Ottoman Turks invaded Hungary three hundred years later. On this occasion the castle was defend with great courage by just 2,000 knights and an assortment of citizens againts 100,000 Turks. The invaders were repulsed and the siege became the stuff of legend. The castle has been restored many times since that famous siege. So much so, that it hardly resembles it medieval origins. There are 19th century barracks where today there is the Eger Art Gallery. There is also a museum dedicated to the history of the castle. Beneath the ramparts there is a small wax museum dedicated to the key figures who took part in the siege of 1552. Also on the castle grounds are the foundations of the Cathedral of St. John which dates from the 12th century. You can visit the castle and most of the museums for 500Ft but the wax museum and mining museum can only be visited a additional cost. The castle museums are open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 7pm. Leave a Comment Address: Egri VarPhone: 312 744Directions: East of the old town of Eger

The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest by Paul2001 The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest was a rather unfortunate affair for me because of the fact that much of the museum was being restored. Therefore about half of the collection was in storage. I was very disappointed because I understand that the museum holds a very strong collection. Still much of the Old Masters works was available for viewing including perhaps the best collection of Spanish painting outside of Spain. This includes seven works by El Greco plus worthy pieces by Ribero and Zurbaran. The museum is also has a heathly collection of Dutch and Flemish masterpieces including "Mucius Scaevola before Porsenna" by Peter Paul Rubens and his then assistant Anthony Van Dyck, two of my favourite painters. There are also many Italian Renaissance paintings here but curiously not many would be classified as masterpieces. The 19th and 20th century collections were closed down during my visit so I cannot say much about them but I do understand that they are not considered to be "important" when compared to the rest of the collection. Minor works by the usual impressionistic names. The museum also has a collection of artifacts dating from Ancient Egypt and Greece. This was good and should not be overlooked which I almost did. I probably would have missed it the rest of the museum had been open. The Museum of Fine Arts is open from 10am to 5:30pm everyday but Monday when it is closed. During by visit admission was free. The Basilica of St. Stephen in Budapest is a very fine neo-classical cathedral. This place is huge and it takes a long time to check the interior out. Here you will find a variety of very ornate altars and chapels. What really struck me was the astonishingly beautiful 19th and early 20th century mosaics that cover the walls around the nave. There are also many gilded stucco and marble object that will grab your attention. One chapel holds the most significant holy relic in Hungary, that being the mummified hand of St. Stephen. Personally I thought that the most amazing aspect of the basilica was the dome which is decorated with splendid mosaics. The basilica took over 54 years to build, partly because it was badly damaged during a storm in 1868. It was not completed until 1905. Any visit to the Basilica of St. Stephen should include a trip up to the dome which is ringed by a viewing platform. From here you have stunning views of Budapest and the Danube. There is an elevator up to here but you can also climb the 302 steps if you are energetic. The Basilica of St. Stephen is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm and on Sunday from 1pm to 4:30pm. Leave a Comment Address: V Szent IstvanDirections: In Central Pest

by Levente_D Did you know that Hungary has the second highest number of hot water springs in the world right after Island? This is the reason why there are so many spas and wellness hotels all arround Hungary. So after the bustling nightlife of Budapest and the dust of the Hortobágy you can wash it off and relax in one of the spas of Hungary. The selection is good from Zalakaros in the west of the country,Hévíz or Sárvár but you can find thermal spa also at the very east side of the country in Gyula, just near the border with Romania! Ofcourse if you dont't want to leave Budapest you may find your spa there as well. Just choose one because there are so many. Famous ones are the Gellért, Rudas, Szécheny but you can choose another one as well! Leave a Comment

The Hungarian National Museum by Paul2001 My favourite museum experience in Hungary was my visit to the Hungarian National Museum. This museum is contains of an extremely important collection of historical relics. The collections are divided into different historical periods that begin with the archaeological exhibits on the first floor and continue onto the second floor with where there are three different sections dedicated to Hungarian history from the 11th century to the 17th century, from the 18th century to the 19th century and through the 20th century. I thought that the exhibits of the 11th to 17th century, the most interesting but that is just a personal prejudice as I enjoy medieval art. The collection here is full of decorative works and fine examples of medieval weaponry. The exhibits are displayed in a very good timeline so if you are ignorant of the details of Hungarian history, then it is easy to follow. The collection on the 20th century is also quite moving as it centres on the political events of the last century. For the Hungarians much of this much seem very tragic as much attention is given to the destruction of Budapest during World War II and the events around the 1956 uprising against Soviet domination. Happily this section ends with the collapse of communism in 1989. The Hungarian National Museum is housed in a historically significant building. It was built in the neo-classical style in 1847. On the steps that you see in this photograph, Sandor Petofi read his poem the "National Song" which help spark the uprising against the Hapburgs in 1848. The museum was free during my visit although I do not think that is always to the case. It is open from 10am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Map of Balaton by Levente_D Another great place in Hungary is the Lake Balaton which is the seccond biggest lake of Europe. Although is not too deep is still quite wide and long and it's a great place for sailing, fishing, water sports and also for getting a nice tan! On the southern side the water is getting deep very slowly so is good also for familes with smaller kidds, while the Norther side is bordered by hills so the water is much deeper. Most of the nighlife goes on in Siófok, but you can find good places in Alsóörs, Hévíz and other places as well. It's a nice journey to make a trip arround the Balaton ... make some stopps and see the vine cellars of Csopak and Badacsony. You can make this trip by bicycle or car ... up to your choice! Aggtelek by Levente_D After washing off the dirt in one of the spas you may get dirty again so you can head north-east in the country where the Mátra mountains are located. Don't expect wild rocks and cliffs as in the Alps but in the Mátra is Hungary's highest point as well (1024 m - Kékestető). Just before the border with Slovakia you will find the cave of Aggtelek which deffinetely worth a visit (if not more). Go and have a look yourself if you like forms created by nature! Leave a Comment

by Levente_D If you go to Hungary Budapest is one of the first places you should visit. Not just because this city is the capital of the country but it dominates the country as well by it's size and cultural values. There are many museums, theatres, opera, shopping centres, cinemas, pubs, bars, discos ... you name it Budapest has it. The two sides of the Danube in Budapest are having some great architecture and they offer a great view and so it became a UNESCO protected site! You can find more info about Budapest on my VT pages: Budapest Leave a Comment

by Paul2001 The Basilica in Eger is a beautiful church built in 1836. The style is called neo-classical and it is certainly welcoming. The sad thing about the church when I visited was that it was very busy. My visits consisted of dodging in and out between weddings and religious services. The interior is very airy with high domes, ornate altars and lovely frescos. I wished I could have spent more time here. Leave a Comment Directions: Southwest edge of the Old Town of Eger

Vajdahunyad castle by Pangea The Vajdahunyad castle is a lovely place in Budapest close to the City Park. It was built in 1896 and contains replicas of buildings of traditional transilvanian architecture (from when Transylvania was part of the Hungarian kingdom). Today the castle houses the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture. Leave a Comment
