The more than 80 works come from the Museum of Fine Arts’ own collection and from various public and private collections, primarily from Great Britain and the United States. The exhibition explores Turner’s lifelong romance with Italy, and celebrates the influence of Italian light and history on his art. Statue Park and the Best of Communism CD

by Marthamaire

From the center of Budapest, you can take a local bus out to the “Statue Park.” Don’t bother paying for a guide or a tour. It is easily doable on your own. In the Park is a collection of all the gigantic statues of Communist leaders inflicted on the Hungarian people when they were a part of the Soviet Empire. Instead of destroying them after they attained their freedom, the clever Hungarians have turned them into a tourist attraction. Besides the statutes, there is a fine assortment of tee shirts with political themes on sale and hilarious CDs of the State produced “patriotic” ditties from the USSR years. I bought a collection with the tongue in cheek titled, “The Best of Communism.”

The View from Gellert Hill

by DueSer

From just about everywhere in Budapest you can see the statue atop Gellert Hill and you may ask yourself - How in the heck do I get up there? Because, yeah, you're right - the view is amazing. Over 750 feet above the Danube, there is no better spot to literally see all of Budapest splayed out before you.The hill has a rather dark history - it was the site of the death of Bishop Gellert. There's a statue of him up there now. There's also a statue that is one of the last signs of Communist Occupation. It's called Liberation Monument because it honors the Red Army's liberation of Hungary from the Nazis. This, however, is what you can see for miles around - a woman holding the "palm of victory." Because it is so visible and had become so recognizable, even after the Communists finally left, they didn't remove the statue. So, how do you get up there? From Pest, take Elizabeth Bridge (that's...

Two Terrific Museums

by DueSer

There are a lot of top-notch museums in Budapest but there are two unique to Hungary that can give you a great introduction to this country if you're visiting for the first time and really don't know that much about Hungary and its people. The first is the Ethnographic Museum (or Neprajzi Muzeum), which is located in Pest right across the street from Parliament. The building this museum is in is the old royal court and it is gorgeous. Once you're able to stop looking at the architecture, you can enjoy the permanent exhibit, which tells the story of Hungarians from the very first, ancient settlement to the present. There are archeological items - pottery shards, old tools - as well as more recent household items, really showing how the people have lived throughout the ages. They also have traditional Hungarian costumes for men and women and explain what all the acoutrements represent.This...

Unique Architecture of Buda

by DueSer

Buda is the older, hillier side of the city and one of the best things to do here is just wander around enjoying the unusual, brightly colored historic buildings. A lot of what to see here is interesting because owners have remodeled their homes and managed to keep a few of the older architectural touches while adding completely modern aspects as well. The result is a fabulous mix of old and new - a perfect way to describe Budapest illustrated in a house-by-house basis. One of the more interesting touches some homes have is a little niche in the side of the front wall. No one knows exactly what these little holes are for but they believe they date from the Medieval period. A place to hide keys? A perch for the family cat? Who knows but, they sure make for an interesting walk.Another fun aspect of this area are some amazing doors. The doors are made of two parts but unlike French doors -...

Margit-sziget

by DueSer

Margaret Island is a large island in the middle of the Danube connected to the city by two bridges - Arpad hid and, the more accessible Margit hid. If you are depending upon public transportation to get around Budapest, Margit-sziget is very accessible via this second bridge. In the middle of it is a tram stop and a bus stop. There is a pedestrian walkway from the tram/bus stop that takes you under the very busy bridge traffic over to the island without having to dodge cars.Once over on the island, there is a lot to do including the option of doing nothing but taking a relaxing walk. Despite everything the island has to offer, it doesn't feel busy or overcrowded. There are still quiet spots to enjoy the flowers and trees. The island is especially beautiful in the spring. If you do want to do something however, there are old church ruins, a UNESCO-recognized water tower, baths, an open-air...

Dohany Synagogue

by DueSer

Like the Bazilika, this spectacular synagogue was also built in the mid-1800s but whereas St. Stephen's is the largest church in Hungary, Dohany is the largest synagogue in all of Europe and the second-largest in the world and it is gorgeous. The exterior is in red, what looks to be sandstone, and gold with the Star of David as design accents. The interior courtyard houses a very solemn momento of times past - a piece of the original ghetto wall. Inside, there are Jewish-related items from the present all the way back to Roman times.

Bazilika

by DueSer

St Stephen's is the largest church in Hungary and is simply called "Bazilika." It's certainly not going to be confused with anything else because this stunning church is impressive.Built in the mid-1800s, locals felt this church was strong enough and safe enough from the bombs of WWII to keep several dear artworks and documents here. Besides the interesting history though, this church is just plain beautiful. The interior is covered in gold and marble and while ornate, it isn't overdone. The church is free (although the treasury does cost a small fee).In front of the church is a lovely square (St. Stephen's Square or Szent Istvan ter in Hungarian) perfect for picture taking, postcard buying, coffee sipping, and people watching, especially when the weather is good.

Take a Walk

by DueSer

Both sides of Budapest are terrific for walking. Buda is hillier and older but Pest has some terrific streets too. So, while the subways here are great, don't take the underground everywhere. Do some walking, especially if you enjoy unique architectural styles because Budapest has a lot of it.One good area would be between Varosliget and Nyugati (the city park and one of the main train stations). The area between Dozsa Gyorgy ut. and Terez korut has some fairly quiet streets with many apartment buildings and a few small shops. These buildings are obviously old and very stylish with unique doorways and other architectural touches.Another nice area is between the Great Market and Andrassy. Andrassy itself is a wide, gorgeous boulevard perfect for strolling but also, the streets around there have some delightfully distinctive styles. So, if the weather is good and you feel up to it - maybe...
