Vajdahunyad Castle

by DueSer

This is a really interesting place plopped down in the middle of the city park. Originally built for the Hungarian Millennial celebrations held back in 1896, this castle was designed to display all the different architectural styles Hungary had to offer. That's why it looks so different depending on where you're standing. If you hadn't just walked from one side to the other you wouldn't suspect it was the same building. Each unique side is beautiful though and the park setting with the lake and statues make it a peaceful place to explore. For a fun activity for the kids (or for yourself) ask them to see if they can find the bust of Dracula. One of the sconces on one side of the building honors local-boy-done-good, Bela Lugosi, who, in the bust, is dressed up to look like Dracula. It's now home to the Agricultural Museum but its exterior homage to Hungary is the real reason to visit. It's...

Coolest Hourglass in the World

by DueSer

Only, it's not really an HOURglass, it's a YEARglass. This was made to celebrate Hungary joining the European Union and I think one of the reasons I like it so much is that it's so unique. Travelling around, I've seen my share of public works of art to celebrate or commemorate this and that and the other thing but, I've never seen anything like this before. Basically, it looks like a giant hockey puck on its side - only prettier. First of all, it's huge - at least 10 feet tall, probably taller, made of a lovely reddish marble. The glass parts are surrounded by the marble and it rests on a cement cradle. Across from it are a series of cement posts of varying heights. Every year, when it's time to turn it over, ropes are fitted around the marble and then threaded through the posts across from it and used as a pulley system to roll it around to the now-empty glass compartment. And the best...

Experiencing the Baths

by DueSer

A lot of people want to experience the baths while in Hungary. If you are in Budapest and want to go to Gellert's, as this is a very famous place to experience the baths, be CAREFUL! Their price list is confusing and not all the people working at the ticket booths understand English even though they say they do. I was in a TERRIBLE fix and almost lost out on a lot of money simply because the woman in the ticket booth said she spoke English and then didn't understand a word I said. She charged me for 2 people because there was a man in line behind me even though I'd asked for "a swimming ticket and one towel" and I asked for a "locker" and she had charged for me a cabin, which is much more expensive. And to "fix" things, she wanted to give me cash back instead of crediting my card. This might have not been a problem if I wasn't leaving Hungary the next morning but I was so there was no...

Spas and baths

by omehes

Whenever you are in Budapest, try out one of the amazing baths of the city. There are many across the capital such as Szechenyi baths just opposite the fun fare place with the oldest European (wooden) roller coaster and zoo in the Varosliget park. It's absolutely amazing and relaxing place: 3 big baths outside open year round with mineral water from 30 to 38 degrees, and 7 or 8 healing baths indoor with temperatures between 20-38 degrees and various smellyness of the pool water. The entrance fee is 2400 forint (around 11 USD) and you can stay as long as you want using all the baths and pools (saunas and steam rooms).

Puzsta in Varga Tanya

by gigina

After the city tour we ventured further into the Hungarian Puzsta for a traditional Hungarian horse farm and participation in a puzsta-program at Varga Tanya. A robust lad and a pretty country girl dressed in their national costume welcomed us with a drink (apricot brandy and cakes pogacsa). Nothing could warm us up on that cold snowy morning, especially as we had to sit on the wooden stairs of the open air theatre. The blue sky and the warm sun were our friends that morning. We watched an equestrian show (like a cow-boy show) portraying art and valour that keeps you alert on the tip of your toes! The fun prolonged after the show as we were hosted on a carriage drive as a prelude to a local feast. Faster and faster the carriage scrambled through the surrounding country side with 'yells' and 'smells'! The obnoxious discomforts camouflaged their intent, because we were all looking forward...

The Military Museum

by nzbumpkin

The Military Museum was sick! You can browse the rich history of Hungary and it's monarchies and it's past borders. There is artefacts from 1500BC, and a lot of World War memorabilia. If you can read Hungarian you could easily spend the day there as a lot of the wall displays are in Hungarian. However, there is a lot of English displays aswell.

Best Event in Budapest

by GunMetalGray

By far, my trips to Budapest have mostly been overshadowed by the Budapest Parade. Also known as the Love Parade, it comes to Budapest once a year in August. During this event, most of downtown is filled by floats and parade go'ers and best of all, Beer. The festival is during the day, and at night come the after party's. I met some cool Hungarians that welcomed me to their place for dinner and then a party...which led to some Bar hopping. If you can, get down there for this. The Sziget Festival is also during this time, and has music and just people hanging out.

The Matthias Church in Budapest

by Paul2001

The Matthias Church was my favourite of the churches in Budapest. It has a stunning location on the Castle Hill over looking the Danube and Pest. The Matthias Church is not as old as it might at first seem. Theoretically it is 500 years old but was largely rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1896. Only a few of the original sculptures remain. The church still has a series of remarkable features that will make your visit rewarding. The exterior has a very impressive tower and a brightly tiled roof that is all the more enchanting. Inside you will see amazing stain glassed windows and a collection of frescoes that are mesmerizing. There is also a museum dedicated to ecclesiastical art which you can visit for additional cost. Here you will see a copy of the Coronation Jewel.A visit to the Matthias Church will cost 300ft while entry to the museum will cost another 300ft. Admission is from 9am...

Visit the Citadel of Visegrad outside Budapest

by haviland

One of the most stunning sights in all of Europe is that of the famous Danube Bend from the top of the Citadel at Visegrad. It was founded in 1250 by King Béla IV and expanded by his successors up to Matthias. The castle survived repeated sieges and conquests during the Turkish wars but was eventually overcome during the Habsburg uprising against the Rákóczi in 1702. Although it is now in ruins, enough of it remains to give a flavor of its magnificence. If you are really lucky you will see eagles wheeling in the sky overhead. For a complete day out, or a romantic evening trip, take a bus from the center of Budapest to the town of Visegrad and return by ferry on the Danube. It's closed on Mondays and open 9-5 on all other days.More European Travel Tips
