The Valley of the Beautiful Woman in Eger

A historical city in nothern Hungary, Eger is famous for its wine called Bull's Blood (Bikavér). However, we visited this proud city because of its famous valley, the so called Szépasszony Völgy (The Valley of the Beautiful Woman). I realised after our visit that there are over 150 wine cellars (some of them are closed or private) in this valley known since 1774! The cellars are cool inside with different wine products from this region. You ask for a wine, the wine maker will give you samples to taste, then you chhose and he dissappears behind a curtain and comes back with cooled bottle. Wine comes from barrels deep underground! Very enjoyable atmosphere, plenty of drinking and tasting possibilities for wine lovers.

The Vassely Museum is an excellent small gallery dedicated to the work of Victor Vasarely, the founder of what is called "op art". Vasarely was born in the grand house and although he made his name abroad in Paris and New York he is looked upon as native son. His works are both fun and challenging. I found the museum to be quite good as there many examples of his works here. The Victor Vasarely Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm. A visit will cost 600ft. There no less than five museums located on Kaptalan utca and visiting them all will keep you busy for an entire afternoon.

It was a long enough journey from Budapest to Eger but well worth it to see this beautiful, relaxed town. Eger is in north-eastern Hungary, and most visitors are attracted by its proximity to the vineyards in this region. The town itself has some beautiful buildings, in particular churches while on the outskirts of town lies the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where you can sample the local wines at great places in a lovely setting.

Szentendre is a very popular day trip from Budapest. It's a beautiful, small town on the Danube Bend with narrow, winding streets and a number of interesting churches and museums. There are regular buses and trains from Budapest and the journey takes about 40 minutes from Batthyany station.

And with good reason as it's a beautiful place, with excellent sights, good nightlife and plenty of activities to keep you occupied. We spent most of our time in Hungary in Budapest and 4 days here was just enough time to see the main sights of the city.
