The Basilica of St Peter's in Pecs

by Paul2001

The Basilica of St. Peter's was the highlight of my visit to Pecs. It originally built in the 11th century but has been rebuilt and renovated many times since. The most recent reconstruction was in 1881 and what you see today is the result. The interior is very ornate with many frescos and mosaics by many of Hungary's most important 19th century artists. The side chapels were very impressive with very fine religious art. The exterior is notable for its four steeples that dominate the skyline of Pecs. It gives the cathedral a Romanesque look although I think that the towers were actually part of the 19th century reconstruction. It costs 1000ft to be admitted to the Basilica.

The Hungarian National Gallery

by Paul2001

I had hope to visit a couple of the museums located the Royal Palace on Castle Hill however I was so impressed by the Hungarian National Gallery that I did not have time to visit any of the other museums here. The Hungarian National gallery is completed dedicated to the art produced by the rich culture of Hungary. Now before entering this museum, I must admit I had trouble naming one Hungarian painter (on the other hand I am very familiar with Hungarian classical composers), so I was a little apprehensive about visiting this museum. Would the works here be worthy of my time. Surprisingly I found the works here quite satisfying. The collection of Gothic altarpieces were splendid. These pieces are held in the old great throne room and I think that they were the highlight of my visit. Furthermore I was also impressed by the quality of painting, particularly the works of the late 19th...

Visegrad

by budapest8

In 1335 the Castle of Visegrad , then the seat of the Kings of Hungary, was the scene of the royal summit of the Kings of Poland , Bohemia and Hungary . They agreed to cooperate closely in the field of politics and commerce, inspiring their late successors to launch a successful Central European initiative.Visegrád was first mentioned in 1009 as a county town and chief town of archdeaconry. After the destructive Mongol invasion in 1242, the town was rebuilt in a slightly different location to the south. King Charles I of Hungary made Visegrád, his hometown, the royal seat of Hungary in 1325.In 1335, Charles I of Hungary hosted a two-month congress held at Visegrád, with other the Bohemian king John of Luxembourg, and the Polish king, Casimir III. It was crucial in creating a peace between the three, and securing an alliance between Poland and Hungary against the Habsburgs.Later,...

Szegetvar.

by margaretvn

Szigetvar ( the island Castle) is 33 kilometres west of Pècs on road number 6. It was built at the end of the 14th century on an island in the Almas Patak river and it had its hour of glory in 1566. It was then that 90,000 Turkish soldiers under the command of Sultan Suleiman the Great attacked it. Zrinyi Miklos and about 2,000 men were garrisoned in the castle. They surrendered after a siege of 33 days and a battle followed with heavy Turkish losses. Close by is the Hungarian/Turkish friendship park. If you are passing by its worth a visit.

Pecs.

by margaretvn

With its 180,000 inhabitants is Pècs the most important city in the southern part of Hungary. It is located at the foot of the Mecsek mountain range, The city is surrounded with farmland including many orchards and vineyards which have given the area a name for excellent wines and fruit. The Romans arrived in the area at the beginning of the Christian Era and developed a city because of its strategic importance in controlling the lowlands in the area. The city was the capital of the Roman province of Valeria, but this declined when the Roman Empire declined. There was only a small Magyar conquest in the 10th century AD. King Stephen I gave the city a new impulse in 1009 when he established a bishopric in the city and built the cathedral on the ruins of a large Roman ruin. By the Middle Ages Pècs was one of the most important religious and cultural centres in Hungary. The first university...

Kecskemet

by margaretvn

One of the most interesting places for tourists on the Great Plain is the city of Kecskemét. The city is about 90 kilometres from Budapest. It is famous for its apricot orchards and the brandy that is made from the apricots - known as Barackpalinka. The area also produces about a third of the countries wine. Kecskemét is built up around two wide squares. These are the Szabadság tér and the Kossuth tér. In the southeast of the city is the beautifully ornate Town Hall with three lovely churches next to it. There is a Catholic church, a Franciscan church and in the centre of the square the Calvinist church. This church was built in the 17th century. Behind this church is a narrow pedestrianised area, one side of it is a white building which was the home of the famous composer Zoltán Kodály. That was why we decided to go there and see the house. It is not open to the public and today it...

Budapest

by margaretvn

Visit Budapest of course - I have built a little page of the city - so I will not repeat the tips here. Budapest, the capital, is a beautiful city and has a population of about 2,000,000; which about one fifth of the country’s population. Budapest is actually a group of citues which includes Obuda, Buda and Pest. It is spread across both sides of the Danube and it contains a wealth of palaces and very impressive public buildings. Pest is located on the river plain and Buda lies on the hillsides.

Sopron

by margaretvn

Visit the little city of Sopron about 7 kilometres from the hungarian Austrian border with its beautiful old centre. This city has 60,000 inhabitants and is the second most important tourist centre in the country (Budapest being the most important). It is only 7 kilometres from the Austrian border. The area was settled probably by the Celts. It became more important though when the fortified way station of Scarabanita was established on the Byzantine trade route from the eastern Roman Empire to Vienna. The city was made in a fortified eclipse shape with the larger public buildings inside. The only remains of this are remnants of the wall though. Then after the Roman period the city lost its importance for a while until Magyar rule was established. Sopron was given “city” status at the end of the 13th century and it was then that many buildings in Gothic style were constructed. The...

Waterpark in Esztergom

by Maragirl

A trip to the basillica in Esztergom is definately worth it. If you are travelling in summer, you can spend the rest of the day at the waterpark. It's newly renovated with pools inside and out, 2 waterslides, grassy areas and deck chairs, and a cafeteria.I wanted a massage (2000 ft for a half hour is a good price) but you cannot go into the waterpark, have a massage and then go back to the pools. So either have the massage before you go in, or after. The latest appointment they had available was 5pm.
