Getting arround by car

by Levente_D

Getting arround by car in Hungary is safe and comfortable as well. Most of the international car rental companies can be found in Hungary but you can have your own car as well. The road system is prety good (exept Budapest - where are a lot of holes). On highways (autópálya) M1, M3, M5, M7 you will need to pay toll. This you do by buying a Vignette(Matrica) from a gas station. They are available in 1day, 4days, 10 days, 31 days and 1 year validity versions. The actual prises in HUF you can check out on the following web page:Autópálya

MÁV

by Levente_D

Getting arround Hungary is very easy. One conforteble way of doing it is by train, using the services of MÁV Rt. (Magyar Állami Vasút Rt. = Hungarian State Railway Ltd.)Their website is unfortunately just in hungarian but hopefuly this will change soon!MÁV

Air

by Levente_D

The fastest way of getting to Hungary is by air and a very comfortable way is by using Malév Hungarian Airline. This is the Hungarian Flag Carrier and it has brand new airplanes and also very nice service. Malév has just a very few flights oversea but it has good service within Europe!Malév

Budapest by subway

by zaffaran

In my opinion the best idea is to move around by public transport which is fast and reliable(especially 3 lines of underground); my advice is to buy Budapest Card which is valid for three days for every means of transport and, what is more, gives you free entrance to main museums in Budapest.

You can come to Budapest via airplane. If you do so, don't take taxi from the airport (it's quite expensive and taxi drivers can fool you). Take airport buses to the city.If you take a taxi, please order it by phone: it is cheaper. In Budapest, traffic is quite OK. There are 3 undergrounds. In smaller cities buses departs rarely. On the picture you can see a tram. Transportation is Budapest is OK, when I examine the time intervalls between departures. However I still think that Budapest transportation sucks.

Taking trains in Hungary

by hayim

If you are travelling inside Hungary, it is quite a good idea to take a train... Ooops, maybe I should say that it is better then to take a bus. Bus transportation is really weak, train is still better. However train transportation also sucks in Hungary. If you take an EC or IC, that's OK. But if you'd like to go to smaller towns or villages, get ready for unpolite personnel in the train, dirty cars, etc. It definitely reminds me on the socalist times. A lot of dirt, lot of money, absolutely no service. But for the feeling it worths to travel by train. I travel every day 70-70 kms. Maybe that's why I hate and love train transportation at the same time :-).

OFF THE RAILS

by Duffelgirl

We travelled to Hungary from Prague by train (need to buy a ticket beforehand - we booked through a main tourist office the day before). It took 7 hours to get there, and aside form being stuck with a loud mouth woman relaying her dull life story, the trip was a good way to see the countryside. Bring some snacks on board because the food sold in the buffet cart was expensive. All the trains we got on were clean, cheap and ON TIME! (A novelty for me). To leave Hungary we were going to get the hovercraft from Budapest to Vienna down the Danube, but it only runs from 8th April until 29th October, so the train it was. If you're UNDER 26 YEARS there is often a discount on train fares - remember to ask.We took advantage of the buses, trains, subways and trams whilst out and about, all were straight forward to use.
