Hydrofoil down the Danube

by kaloz

This picture was taken in Vienna. It was cheaper for us to fly to Vienna and take the most expensive way to get to Budapest (hydrofoil) than to fly directly to Budapest. This is a great way to start a trip!! You get to see the countryside from this important river. It is three and a half hours down, and four and a half back. You catch the hydrofoil at Mexicoplatz. Which we found amusing because Pops winters in Mexico!

From the airport

by BostonSeto

From the airport, the best transportation to take is the minibus. There is a counter when you exit from the custom. Go to the counter and tell them which hotel you are going. Buy your ticket, and wait for the driver to call. You can also buy the round trip ticket and later ask your hotel to call the minibus to pick you up on the returning day. It is safer and cheaper then regular taxi

The Hungarian National Railway (MAV)

by lonely_traveller

Getting around Hungary is easy, with frequent train departure and quite cheap fares (though not so cheap when you come from Romania or Bulgaria) and the train systems seem to be a bit more organised. But still, it is better to find your own way than asking people. Expect no one at the train station to speak any English!

by dreamworld

We did all our trip with our own car. Roads are excellent. Just keep in mind that some Hungarian still drive with Trabant's and Lada's (Eastern Block cars)and usually don't drive very fast....due to the bad condition of their vehicle. Credits Cards are widely accepted at almost all gas stations.

If you're coming from Austria,...

If you're coming from Austria, which is usually the case, my recommendation is the hydrofoil service between Vienna and Budapest. It'll cost a bit more than the train, but it's far more comfortable and infinitely more interesting. You even get to go through two or three locks, which are rather entertaining if you aren't used to such things. You leave Vienna around 10:00 im the morning and get into Budapest about five hours later after having sailed past Bratislava, Slovakia, numerous castles, many villages and towns. If you come by car, park it, and leave it until it's time to exit Budapest because of a highly confusing one-way system that will drive you nuts.By all means use public transport. There is a highly developed bus, tram, and metro system that will get you where you want to go quite efficiently.Taxis are also an option and they are not expensive. Definitely something to...

by Mr_Furious

Eurolines busses are the cheapest way to reach Hungary from western Europe, although travelling by bus is not as comfortable as train travel.Since I was travelling with Interrail I went to Hungary by train, which is also cheap if you buy a ticket from somewhere in Eastern europe. If not, fares are rather high.

I arrived via express train from Prague. It was very comfortable and practically empty.Streetcars and a pretty good subway. The main problem I had was in deciphering that infernal Hungarian language! It is very hard to figure out the correct subway stop due to the garbled sound of the announcements and the trains were very crowded. I recommend getting a Budapest card which is valid for 2 or 3 days and gives discounts on most activities. You can find it at most tourist offices.

by Pavlik_NL

Many European bustouroperators offer various organised programms to Hungary. Besides that the country is also with own car easy to reach. The International Airport of Budapest delivers daily visitors to the country. We did it by bike, which is very special, but also risky. Bikingpaths are only few and some roads have such dense traffic, that it is no pleasure to go around on your bicycle. However, it makes you come in close contact to the people and you see everything with a extreme intensity.Within Budapest the public transport, especially the metro, is a perfect way to get around.Trains connect some towns in Hungary, but seem to have a very flexible timetable. With busses it's the same story. With your own car it is better to cross the country and roam around.

You can get to Hungary by...

by Levente_D

You can get to Hungary by plane, by car, by train or by boat! With plane you will arrive to Budapest Ferihegy Airport, that is a small but very nice airport with good facilities and good connections to other European airflight hubs like Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam. Comming from overseas is more than sure you'll have to go via one of the above cities.Train connection to Budapest are also very good and train fares are more convenient. An alternative solution could be the bus as EUROLINES operates coaches between many cities of Europe and Budapest. Backpackers should go for this solution as this is the cheapest way to get there.By ship you can arrive from Vienna. Nice trip all th way down the Danube!Hitchhiking is not too popular in Hungary and usually drivers are not stoping for hitchhikers although you may try it if you want since it is costless in Hungary

Getting to Hungary is simple. ...

by slinki

Getting to Hungary is simple. Get on a moving vehicle and voila. Train, plane, automobile - it makes no difference. All roads lead to Hungary. More precisely Budapest. There is Ferihegy airport, 3 major train stations (East, West and South) and bus stations. From Budapest you can get to anywhere in Hungary.Getting to anywhere in Hungary is usually best done by train. Relatively cheap, not always fast. There are ICs (InterCities) to bigger destinations that don't stop at *all* the little stations along the way. Buses are normally slower (the roads in Hungary leave a lot to be desired). And if you happen to be by car, the fastest way to travel is by highway (toll), unfortunately the highway system is underdeveloped.
