The settlement consisted mostly of retired soldiers of the Fifteenth Apollonian Legion and their families, merchants and craftsmen. Together with the towns of Emona ( now Laibach, Slovenia)...

    what makes Szentgotthard special...

by picek Updated Aug 16, 2010

...that is its Baroque church of St Gotthard of the former Cistercian monastery, large historic building in centre of town accompanied by simple and small park with large trees, just to make it perfect ground for meetings - visiting church for Sunday masses or Saturday weddings and ceremonies... or for those wishing to come just to see it.

For Raba river valley this building is the most important Baroque architecture, built between 1748 - 1765 according to plans of Fraz Anton Pilgram from Austria; only fragments of Romanesque architecture of previous monastery church from 12th century remained in vicinity. It is building abundant in detail on its pilastered facades, magnificient bell tower as well as inside, especially the high altar, columned walls and ceiling with rich painting and pilaster- do take a trip to this remote town near Austrian and near Slovenian border just for these looks.
    It's worth!

detail above the main door abundant inside church from the park view
