30 kms south west of Vészprem is Tihany on the shores of Lake Balaton. Found on the tip of a small headland jutting into the Lake, the small village is almost completely surrounded by a pretected nature reserve. The town gained significance when King Andrew I founded a monastery in 1055. A fortress was built round it to protect it in 1267 which kept out the Ottoman threat, but not enough to keep the Habsburgs out and the fortress was demolished in 1702 (remains are still to be found). Tihany has now become something of a holiday destination.
The church that is to be found today was built in 1754 and there are stunning carvings to be found inside. There's also a small Open Air Folk Museum in the village. Walks are also a key attraction to Tihany and many of the walks will bring you to various ruins.
