Theft on trains: yes, it's really bad.

by brandi05

Theft on trains is very, very bad in Hungary. Always watch your bags, always keep your money and documents on your body, and be especially cautious during longer stops in big train stations (such as Budapest), when lots of people board and leave the train. While there is occasional police presence, individual policemen seem to be completely indifferent about the problem so that even some Hungarians I spoke with suspect they tolerate or even cooperate with the thieves. If something is stolen from you, you *must* adamantly insist on having a report filed on the spot, and getting some official piece of paper. Do not believe stories like "the law requires you to leave the train and come to the police station for three hours" or "you can file the report in another country", which are simply lies to avoid work with tourists and make local crime statistics look better. Myself and some work...

Check the Mattress First!

by TexasDave

In a few of the smaller pensions/hotels we stayed at the mattresses were not up to our expectations and were downright uncomfortable. They were about 3 inches thick and filled with some kind of material that flattened out when you laid down on it. It was more what you would see on lawn or poolside furniture. Maybe we're just wimps, but none of us slept good on those beds. So before accepting the room, just thump the mattress.

Take care on the train -- Robbers

by into-thin-air

My friend Helga who I meet up with from time to time was meeting me in Budapest, She caught the train down from Vienna and was robbed just as the train was pulling into Keleti railway station, Budapest. There are two railway stations that the Vienna train stops at in Budapest and some people got on at the first one and one of them came to the compartment where Helga was sitting alone and said something to her. presumably in Hungarian and Helga said that she didn't understand so this guy shouted something again and Helga said that she was Austrian and didn't speak Hungarian and the guy left, Then that train pulled up just short of Keleti railway station. presumably at a red light and there was another guy outside on the tracks started to bang on the train window, shouting and screaming, this distracted Helga and when she looked around and her bag had gone !! This all happened in seconds,...

Dodgy Police

by bakerman

Hungarian police earn §§-all, so, naturally, some of the people on the force are neither the smartest, nor the most ethical. Despite massive anti-corruption efforts in the last year, a popular police scheme is to catch motorists commiting petty offenses (like turning without indicating) and letting them know that there is a very expensive fine on that.... sometimes they even just invent a reason and intimidate you.You dont really have to fear anything, though. They wouldnt hit you or lock you up, it isnt that bad, just annoying. In case you didnt do anything, just stay polite, smile and firmly refuse to pay. Most of the time they wouldnt mention a bribe explicitely, but they might say things like: That would cost you at least $330,- in your country! Pretend to not understand (if you do)! If there are more people in the car, get out all of you to have witness. Pretend to have a smoko if...

Making phone calls

by bakerman

It's abit different then elsewhere, so I try to make it clearer:The country code is +36The are area code/prefix for Budapest is 1The area codes/prefixes for the other regions have two digitsMobile phone nets have the codes/prefix 20 (Pannon), 30 (Westel), or 70 (Vodafone)Phone numbers in BP have seven digits, elswhere in the country 6 digits. Mobile phone numbers also have seven. For calling within one area/net no prefix needs to be dialled. If you want to call from one net/area to another, you have to dial 06 first, then the code of the area/net, then the number. If you call from abroad, however, you do not dial the 06. Instead, you dial +36, then 1 if it is a BP fixed line, or the 2-digit area/net code, if it is not in BP, then the phone number.Often fixed-line phone numbers are stated without prefixes. In that case, if the number has seven digits, it is a BP number. If it has six digits,...

The best way ro get a traffic fine.

by SanNational

If you drive, you will be surprised of the good skills that Hungarian drivers exhibit. Speeding is fairly rampant, but you will be warned by the flashing headlights of the hidden danger of police presence. The most likely way a tourist getting pulled over is not having your headlights turned on. Outside city limits, your head-light have to be on 24 / 7 while you are driving.

Rip Off Resturant

by john1379

Gundel Posted 4-13-2002 08:16 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------For the 'supposedly' cream of Hungarian quisine, Gundel is a Joke. The food is mediocre and over priced, the Gypsy band gets on your nerves and on some evenings the 'primas' plays constanly in your ear until you pay him to go away, the waiters are arrogant and I also had the same situation with the tip. Maybe Mr George Lang should put his house in order. there are a thousand restaurants in Budapest which are a better bet.

There are some dangers in...

by vadjutka

There are some dangers in Budapest while travelling in the city. 1. Ticet collectors: they are very severe if you dont have the proper ticket on the bus, metro etc. And the ticket-system in Budapest is a bit confusing, there are a lot of type if them. The best you can do to avoid fining (which is expensive) is to buy a season ticket (you need a photo) for 14 or 30 days. (2000 and 4000 HUF) This season ticket is valid on every type of vehicle. 2. Taxi: There are some 'unofficial' taxidrivers at every station or at bigger junctions, who charge a lot more than the trip worth. You can recogonise them, because they dont have their company's name on their car. The major 'official' taxi companies: City Taxi, Buda Taxi, 6x6 Taxi, Volan Taxi, Fotaxi, Radio taxi, Est Taxi. Taxi fee is much cheaper in other cities, except for at Lake Balaton's major cities.
