Vineyards

Vineyards, Turje

aramat Says:  In Turje, most families have a smaller or bigger vineyard in the surrounding hills ("on the Hill", one would say). The view is pretty from most of these places, particularly because the church dominates the landscape, and quite good wines might be found. I liked very much...

Church

Church, Turje

aramat Says:  Turje is indeed famous for its church: it's an impressive brick building (brick was rarely used as construction material in the Middle Ages), visible from long distances and a great symbol of the village. On the picture you can see the old clocks that were removed from the...

aramat Says:  The small guesthouse offers 3 rooms for altogether 8 persons, and a nice garden to relax with a little pool. It's a 3-sunflower guesthouse (sunflowers are used instead of stars in the classification of rural accommodation in Hungary). The host is Mr. Istvan Laszlo.

The cemetery

The cemetery, Turje

aramat Says:  Ordinary graveyards are usually not places visited by tourists, even though they reflect the culture of a community. (Certain old cemeteries are, of course, exceptions and very much visited, like the Pere Lachaise in Paris or the Colón in Havana or the Cities of the Dead in...

Excursion to the Hill, Turje

aramat Says:  The Hill - "a hegy" - where most families have their vineyards is a nice place for a walk as well. This crucifix is on the Upper Hill (Felsohegy).

View from the vineyard

View from the vineyard, Turje

aramat Says:  There is a nice view from anywhere on the Upper Hill. The church can be also seen, I just didn't include it in this picture. This photo was taken during the wine harvest in 1997. It was a lovely day, we were lucky with the weather. The little house in the middle was my...

The village

The village, Turje

aramat Says:  This is the main street of Turje, leading to the centre. It goes uphill and even if it doesn't look too steep (particularly not on the picture), it's not very easy to ride up a bycicle and when I was a kid, with my friends it was a challenge to do it

Rural life 2.

Rural life 2., Turje

aramat Says:  An other example of rural life is that some of the corncobs were dried outside, hanging on the well. I think it's a nice, warm sight, typical of the late summer colours in Turje.

Rural life

Rural life, Turje

aramat Says:  Turje is an authentic village, so visiting it gives a glimpse of life in the countryside in Hungary. Most familes have a few domestic animals, cats and dogs, and also poultry and pigs, sometimes cattle as well. These were my grandma's hens and here they were longingly...

Turje - my grandparents' village

aramat profile photo

Turje (with an umlaut on the "u", but if I type the right Hungarian character, it looks "?" in VT) is the place where my grandparents used to live and I've been there many-many times. Now only my...
