Turje Things to Do

  • St. Florian's statue

Florian was born in 250 AD and as a soldier, he rose to the position of chief of the fire brigade. Later he became a Christian and professed his faith, so he was sentenced to to burned at the stake. But the soldiers had trouble to light the fire and Florian had to be executed by drowning in the river Enns (in Austria). His body was found and buried...

  • Playground (Jatszoter)

Close to the church, there is a pleasant playground with nice hand-carved wooden equipment. It looks interesting and it's fun for kids and even for adults.

  • Early gothic church in Turje

This church is one of the oldest and best preserved church of the Order of Premontre, built in its current form around 1230 in early gothic style. The original building underwent a significant restoration in the 18th century when baroque style frescoes were painted by Istvan Dorffmeister. During the latest renovation a medieval wall painting was...

Turje Off The Beaten Path

  • The cemetery

Ordinary graveyards are usually not places visited by tourists, even though they reflect the culture of a community. (Certain old cemeteries are, of course, exceptions and very much visited, like the Pere Lachaise in Paris or the Colón in Havana or the Cities of the Dead in New Orleans or Cairo). The cemetery in Turje is really pretty: usually the...

  • Graves

This is my grand-grandparents grave. We visit it every year on All Saints day, bring flowers and light candles.

  • Excursion to the Hill

The Hill - "a hegy" - where most families have their vineyards is a nice place for a walk as well. This crucifix is on the Upper Hill (Felsohegy).

  • View from the vineyard

There is a nice view from anywhere on the Upper Hill. The church can be also seen, I just didn't include it in this picture. This photo was taken during the wine harvest in 1997. It was a lovely day, we were lucky with the weather. The little house in the middle was my uncle's cellar.

  • The village

This is the main street of Turje, leading to the centre. It goes uphill and even if it doesn't look too steep (particularly not on the picture), it's not very easy to ride up a bycicle and when I was a kid, with my friends it was a challenge to do it

  • Rural life 2.

An other example of rural life is that some of the corncobs were dried outside, hanging on the well. I think it's a nice, warm sight, typical of the late summer colours in Turje.
