Hrísey

by travelfrosch

Hrísey, Iceland's second largest island, is situated right in the middle of the incredibly beautiful Eyjafjörður. While you can stay on the island (it has a guesthouse and a camp site), you can also make a day-trip of it from Akureyri. If you have a car, you only need to drive to Árskógssandur, park, and take the ferry to the island. If you don't have a car, it's a bit more complicated, though you can take the TREX bus to Árskógssandur, which coincides with the ferry. Beware: the 17:00 ferry is normally the last to connect with a bus in Árskógssandur (departing at 17:15). You also must call TREX buses in advance (461 1106) and ask to be picked up at the ferry dock. Finally, be sure to double-check all bus schedules at the Akureyri bus station before you depart, as timetables change frequently and without prior notice.Once you get to Hrísey, enjoy the magnificent mountains and water to be...

Catholic Church

by brazwhazz

The Catholic Church is one of those buildings that best represents Akureyri's simple, yet colourful, architecture and atmosphere. It was built in 1912, around the same time as some of the town's most beautiful houses. We passed in front of it on our way from "downtown" to the Botanical Gardens. The address is Eyrarlandsvegur 26. When I read my travel guide again, I was reminded that the well-known "Útlaginn" (Outlaw) sculpture is located at the nearby turnaround.
