Why does water fly toward the sky?

by acemj Updated Jun 3, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Geysers are caused by surface water seeping down through the ground until it meets rock that is heated by magma beneath the surface. There is a reservoir of water toward the bottom of the geyser column. After this water is heated beneath the ground, it rises back toward the surface by convection. The "plumbing" of the geyser has to be just right, so a narrow tube that leads to a small vent in the earth is ideal.

As the geyser fills, the water at the top of the column cools off, but because the column is narrow, it doesn't allow the water at the bottom in the reservoir to cool off. As a result, the cooler water above presses down on the hotter water beneath like pressure cooker and the water in the reservoir becomes superheated. Eventually, the temperatures at the bottom of the geyser rise and boil. Steam rises through the column and from the vent. Pressure builds and eventually, the water has built up enough pressure that it has no choice but to burst through the surface. Voila! A geyser.

  • Geysers in action!

by Gentenaar Written Oct 13, 2005

Favorite thing: Geysir national park is a lovely location in the inland of Iceland, there is a shop / restaurant, the beautifull nature and offcourse the hot water springs and geysers. It's a very touristic place. The most active geyser the "Strokkur" pumps up water every 4 to 8 minutes and 20 metres high.

Fondest memory: The close-up of the goat ! The sheep...
Isn't it look so real ?
Anyway, in this Information Centre we can also buy souvenirs, all prices, cheap to expensive...
I didn't buy anything unfortunately...I saved it till later.
Anyway, this was also my last photo in Geysir; After this photo was taken, I slowly walked down the stairs & ran to my bus...
It was a good excursion, a good trip !
    Expensive but nice...!
So, our next destination on this Golden Circle Tour was : Thingvellir National Park ! [please click]It's so beautiful !
I was at this national park the previous day with Siggi on our own excursion which I personally called : The Cold Valley Trip ! [please click]

Fondest memory: In another corner, I saw this goat ! The sheep, whatever you feel like calling it...
It looked so real also !
    Look at the horns !
So much we could learn about Iceland in this museum...I know some of you might call this 'tourist trap' but to me everything is built/set up, for a reason...It depends how you 'look' at it, right ?
If you feel cheated, you will call 'something' as tourist trap !

    They looked so real !
I took this photo because I had never seen how a minx looked like !
Now I know...& now most of you know !
I know their skins can be made into expensive fur coats !

Fondest memory: Another nice display is the platform where we can walk over while there are hot boiling larvas underneath us !
It's like walking in the middle of erupting volcano ! Well, something like that anyway...
I took a photo for the memory...Everybody thought I was silly as it was not the real thing !
    So bloody what !?

Fondest memory: Walking back to the car park & I had about half an hour more to be around the area, so I entered the Multimedia Museum, which was free entrance for me, included in The Golden Circle Tour ! Great !
In this museum, we are informed about the geysers, the eruptions, the earthquakes...everything that we want to know about Iceland really !
The best one is the earthquake platform where we could stand on it & feel the vibrations on the ground !

Fondest memory: Oh ! Before I walked back to the car park/ the Information Centre...I had to make sure that I had a memory for myself being in Geysir.
Asked somebody, I think a Japanese to snap a photo of me, with my back the Strukkur erupting !
The guy had to wait, I had to wait...I felt like I was posing for the guy as I didn't know when the eruption would happen.
I could hear the 'erupting' noise, like Whoooosssh !...Then the guy said, "Okay !".
I didn't even have the time to smile...

Fondest memory: This area is also filled with nice green scenery, hills surrounding the area.
The hill area is called Laugarfjall...
I thought I should leave this area as I had to get back to the carpark or I shall miss my bus back to Reykjavik !
Siggi would be worried of me if that happened, of course that didn't...
Him & his son had a plan for me on that evening, wonder what plan ?

Wait for the spring to wake up

by bzh Written Mar 8, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Don't leave Geysir without having taken the time to see a geyser spray from close up. Don't worry, you will get fair warning. Just before spraying, the pool will start going up and down, as if the geyser was breathing slowly before waking up.

    Impossibly blue

by bzh Written Mar 8, 2003

Fondest memory: A geyser pool has a very unusual colour due to the minerals and sulfur in the water. Bright blue, with light red sandy rock below, light playing on the water, all produce amazing effects.

Fondest memory: Fumes, geyser pools, iron red earth, bright green hills. A landscape out of this world. This is Geysir. Who needs to go to Mars when we have such sceneries on Earth? Unforgettable.
