by acemj There's only one choice for food here at the waterfalls, but the restaurant here is actually quite good. You'll find a path at the top of the stairs from the falls that leads towards the restaurant and gift shop. I had a traditional Icelandic lamb stew and a bottle of water for 1300 Kr (about $20, ouch!) which was quite tasty. It came with as much bread as you wanted and the stew was all you can eat, so I guess if you were really hungry, the price wouldn't be quite so outrageous. On the cold and windy day I was here, the warm and hearty stew tasted all the better because of the weather outside and it was nice to just relax and reflect on the power of nature and the beauty of the waterfalls. Well, this cafe at the Gullfoss site seemed OK. The food was reasonably priced and tasty. However, in hindsight, the sandwich I picked was not a wise choice. While my smoked lamb sandwich tasted just fine, I had "tummy trouble" very shortly after eating it. As a result, I need to mark the restaurant's rating down, since my getting sick shortly after eating at an establishment is going to result in a lowered rating form me. Sorry. The restaurant is open daily from 9AM - 6PM, 9AM - 7PM on weekends.
Most of the locals appeared to be going for the Meat Soup. Perhaps I would've been better off had I done the same.

The traditional Icelandic meat-soup/broth. by Regina1965, 3 more photos There are two parking lots by Gullfoss, one down by the waterfall and one by the main road on the hill. Gullfoss Café is up on the hill, just walk up the stairs from the first parking lot. There is a souvenir shop there as well. It is well worth stopping there after visiting the breathtaking waterfall Gullfoss and eating a good traditional Icelandic meat-soup which is their speciality. It all started back in 1994 when Svavar, the owner of Gullfoss Café, sold Icelandic sweetmeat from a tent by Gullfoss :D He did so for several years until in year 2000 he opened the restaurant and 4 years later he extended it to 300 fm2. It is estimated that half a million tourists visit Gullfoss every year so business is lively and some days he sells tens of liters of soup per day! Gullfoss Café is open all year round from 9-18 on workdays and 9-19 weekends.
Traditional Icelandic meat-soup/broth (Íslensk kjötsúpa). It is yummy, especially to us Icelanders who were raised on this soup. The traditional recipe is: soup-meat, either lamb or mutton, water, chopped onion, swede (turnip), carrots, white cabbage, rice, oat, salt and pepper. This is the traditional recipy but one can make other variations.
