    A CHESS CHAMPION IN EXILE

by davidjo Written Jul 25, 2015

Around 10 kms from Selfoss in the direction of Vik you will be able to see a house where Bobby Fischer used to live. Bobby Fischer, the chess maestro who won the title in Iceland back in 1972 by beating the Russian Spassky . He became the champion after the contest too k 3 months from July ot September winning 12 1/2 to 8 1/2. He made anti American and anti Israel statements and eventually he was caught and held in detention in Japan. in order to avoid being deported to USA he asked the Icelandic Government requesting citizenship, but Iceland only decided to give him an Alien's passport which proved insufficient for the Japanese, so the government then discussed the situation and awarded Fischer full citizenship on humanitarian grounds as they felt he was being mistreated by the USA government.
In January 2008 he died from renal failure after refusing surgery and buried at Laugardælir church just outside Selfoss.

A PRISON TURNED IN TO A GUEST HOUSE

by davidjo Written Jul 25, 2015

Bitra Guest House can be seen around 8 kms after you leave Selfoss on the way to Vik. It was originally built as an eighteen room prison for women but was never used. Now it is a guest house with large spacious rooms but small toilets.

LIFE AS A PRISONER IN ICELAND.
I believe that there are 5 prisons in Iceland that can accommodate less than 200 inmates in all. Prisoners are allowed to bring their DVD players, laptop, flat screen TVs and a host of other possessions. the prisons are low security. The prisoners spend their time working or studying and their average earnings is around 28,000 kroner per month which is 140 pounds, $200. With this money they are expected to buy their own groceries and cook their own meals as there is not a big dining hall. After the prisoners have spent a third of their term they may apply for a day out each month to visit their family or short term leave to attend funerals weddings or other personal events. Although the prisons are not 5 * hotels there is a certain amount of luxury that you don't see in the rest of the world.

    OLFUSA, ICELAND'S GREATEST RIVER

by davidjo Written Jul 25, 2015

Just before you enter the town of Selfoss the road crosses a bridge which spans the Olfusa River which is a combination of the Hvita and Sog rivers. From Selfoss the river will flow another 25 kms before it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It also happens to be the country's largest river with a flow of 423 cubic m per second and is also famous for its salmon industry.

    Kerið Crater

by jmpncsu Written Dec 30, 2012

Kerið is a crater lake about 15 km north of Selfoss just off Route 35. We visited during our Golden Circle Tour with Iceland Guided Tours. The crater was formed about 6,500 years ago and is the northern end of a row of craters called Tjarnarhólar in the Grímsnes area. The oval-shaped crater is 270 m long, 170 m wide, and 55 m deep, with the water depth varying from 7 to 14 m. The water in the crater is the water table - it is not primarily fed by rain and does not drain out, so the crater lake acts as a window to the groundwater. It's a very short hike up to the rim of the crater and it's possible to walk around the rim of the crater and to hike down to water as well. With beautiful red- and pink-colored walls and deep turquoise water, it is definitely worth a stop on the way to see the more famous sights of the Golden Circle.

This huge mountain is situated just outside Selfoss. This is a huge and impressive mountain. If you want, you can drive partly around it. It is really nice to see the different kind of shades. Especially when there are clouds and sun.

  • Visit Hveragerði Geothermal Area

    From August 2007:
Hveragerði Geothermal Area is in the middle of Hveragerði. You can see several hot springs and fumaroles. If you are lucky you can see one of the springs bubble up, which I was told happens only once a day.

  • Do a day trip driving around the "Golden Circle"

    by travel10000 Written Dec 11, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    From August 2007:
Do a day trip driving around the "Golden Circle". We stayed overnights in Hveragerði, started driving around 9:30am and got back to Selfoss around 5:30pm. Total driving time was about 3 1/2 hours, so we had plenty of time for each stop including some hiking. One of the roads was unpaved, but our small rental car was fine, no need for 4x4. See separate tips on each of the following places we stopped that day:

    Kerið Crater
    Gullfoss
    Geysir
    Þingvellir

When you are in Selfoss, you can walk along the river Olfus. This river is massive. And there is a strong current in this river. You will have nice views to the other side of the river.
