One of Iceland's largest tourist attractions, the Hraunfossar waterfalls are beautiful, accessible and unusual. All the waterfalls are spring fed, bubbling out under a layer of lava and into a bigger river. They are not that tall, but spring fed waterfalls come out of a wide section of the lava gorge. This is and should be compulsory on a visit to this area of iceland. good roads to this area, too.
A bit up from the waterfalls are the bigger falls in the main river, Barnafoss.

River Hvita meanders through the Borgarnesfjordur landscape and is the water ribbon that unities this area. It is a calm, meandering river below the Hraunfossar stretch. Some side rivers and the main river itself are good for salmon fishing, but don't try without a licence! Hvita cuts through some of the main agricultural areas of Iceland. Prior to settlement, this was all forested terrain. Now, recovered pasture and agricultural land dotted with farms, some of them described in the Sagas. Very pleasing to the eye, these broad valleys of the Borgarnesfjordur.

Skardsheidi is a very nice mountain ridge, in part plateau between Hvalfjordur and Borgarnes. There are several lesser peaks and outcroppings in the 400-meter range, while the ridge reaches 1000 meters or so. I found the best access to be from roads 507 in the north and 50, skirting the east flank. Good short walks and more here. Road 50 gives you the advantage of crossing a pass for easier access. Many trails, some marked.

The former home of saga author Snorri Sturlasson is at Reykholt. I passed late in the evening and things seemed closed, so I did not get inside anything. The place seems hijacked by some Christian organisation or initiative, but there is a museum of sorts, too.

I went there after normal sightseeing hours, and you need a guide and torches etc to have the full benefit of this side trip. Although the scenery there is still fantastic, you can't really get into the depth of the caves without assistance - and the key to the padlock!
