Riding through the lava plains at Ishestar

Ishestar is an enormous riding school and stable in Hafnarfjordur that offers riding lessons and all sorts of day and overnight tours on their lovely Icelandic horses. The Icelandic horse breed has remained pure to its Viking roots since the 9th Century and this horse is pleasant, steady, and a joy to ride. The Icelandic horse is different from other horses because it has 5 natural gaits: the fetgangur (walk), the brokk (traditional trot), the tölt (really smooth running walk), the skeið (pace), and the stökk (gallop). Ishestar has a restaurant inside the main building and has TONS of horses suitable for all riding abilities. I've ridden horses all my life and this was a real treat to experience the tölt on an Icelandic horse (in its native land!) for the first time.
