  • Tyrkjaránið - The Turkish abduction.

    Grindavík Things to Do

In 1627 the Algerians, which Icelanders believed to be Turks back then, attacked Iceland, including Grindavík, and took away with them slaves from here, 12 Icelanders and 3 Danes. These people were sold into slavery in Salé in Morocco. This attack has always been called Tyrkjaránið or The Turkish abduction- even though it is now known that they were...

  • The Memorial for fishermen.

    Grindavík Things to Do

As in every hamlet in Iceland there is a memorial for fishermen in Grindavik. It is called Vonin or The Hope, and shows a woman with two kids waiting and hoping for her husband to return back from sea. It is heartbreaking seeing this, as so many women lost their husbands at sea and so many children lost their father at sea. And many sons drowned...

    Hafnir Things to Do

On the coast, stop and see the Reykjanesviti lighthouse. Enjoy the views of the sea. On a clear day, you can see all the way to a small island about 10 miles off the coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Eldey Island. This island is about 1 square mile, and rises out of the sea to a height of 250 feet. Its sheer cliffs are home to large numbers of...

    Hafnir Things to Do

The Bridge Between The Two Continents is located on the black sand beach of Sandvík, near Hafnir. This is a place where two of the earth’s tectonic plates split. As the tectonic plates of North America and Europe are drifting apart, this increases Iceland's area by a few millimeters each year.

    Keflavík Shopping

Although I stopped-over in Keflavik in June, the weather was rather chilly. I wasn't prepared for this type of climate as it's quite warm in June where I live. So my Icelandic pen-pal Gudbjörg, who visited me at Keflavik International Airport, and I decided to pay a visit to the International Iceland Sweater Store at Keflavik International...

    Keflavík Things to Do

When you drive into this sleepy village you may deiced to continue on out and make your way to "better" places. This may be the case but you may miss some nice little gems. Tucked in the corner of the harbor is one of the coolest little structures I have ever seen. I'm not sure what this building is used for but it is neat. When in the harbor you...

Riding through the lava plains at Ishestar 1 more image

by DaShast Written Oct 20, 2007

Ishestar is an enormous riding school and stable in Hafnarfjordur that offers riding lessons and all sorts of day and overnight tours on their lovely Icelandic horses. The Icelandic horse breed has remained pure to its Viking roots since the 9th Century and this horse is pleasant, steady, and a joy to ride. The Icelandic horse is different from other horses because it has 5 natural gaits: the fetgangur (walk), the brokk (traditional trot), the tölt (really smooth running walk), the skeið (pace), and the stökk (gallop). Ishestar has a restaurant inside the main building and has TONS of horses suitable for all riding abilities. I've ridden horses all my life and this was a real treat to experience the tölt on an Icelandic horse (in its native land!) for the first time.
