Iceland used to be defended by NATO until October 30th 2006 when the Americans decided to evacuate the base after having stayed here for 55 years. They had made a contract with the Icelandic nation after WW2 and were in control of the old International airport, so every time we went abroad we had to pass through their base. Now we have another, much bigger airport right next to the base "Flugstöđ Leifs Eiríkssonar". The web-site for our airport is www.airport.is/English/. When NATO left they gave all of the block-of-flats and the buildings to the Icelandic nation and there was a big sale on all the furniture and stuff and all the cars they left behind. Now a lot of the block-of-flats are inhabited by students who study at the University in Reykjavík and they get free bus rides to Reykjavík to attend the University. Around 1.700 people are now living there and more than 30 companies have moved there or opened their offices there (many of them in the field of science, Keilir f.ex.) But a lot of the block-of-flats are still empty. Driving through part of the base has an eerie feel to it as it used to be buzzing with life. Now it is slowly coming alive again and in April 2009 this area got the name Ábrú and the plans are to make it into the most prominent incubator center in Iceland. As you can see from the pictures we had to pass 2 check-points. In the back-ground on the pictures of the block-of-flats is a view of Keflavík (Reykjanesbćr). In the background of the statue of Hrafna-Flóki is the building which used to be our old airport. Have a look at the additional tip for more pictures of the base. Directions: The former Nato base is located right above Keflavík (Reykjanesbćr) on the road leading to the International airport. Instead of turning right for Keflavík you turn left for the base.

Gullfoss by Sharrie Gullfoss: At Gullfoss, the waters originate on the Langjokull glacier & drops a total of 32 m (104 ft) in 2 stages into the Gullfossgljufur Gorge. On a sunny day, you can see a huge rainbow across the entire waterfalls & it's really an incredible sight! Leave a Comment

Strokkur by Sharrie Geysir & Strokkur. Another must on the Golden Circle Route. Geysir - meaning 'Gusher' was formed in the 13th century but erupted at irregular intervals since an earthquake in 2000. Strokkur is just adjacent to Geysir & erupts at regular interval of 5-10 minutes. Leave a Comment

by Sharrie Proceed to the BLUE LAGOON & take a bath. The water is reputed to have healing properties for sufferers of skin ailment. This is one of the highlights of many visitors to Iceland. Formed by accident when condense steam from the power station was released into the lava field (to disappear) but the mineral solution made the lava watertight instead. Having been examined by scientists & declared safe, it was found to be excellent for healing some skin diseases. Leave a Comment

These kinds of Viking ships were really popular back in 900 +/- The Icelander (ÍSLENDINGUR) Viking ship was built in 1994-1996 by Gunnar Marel Eggertsson, who built it as close to how the real Vikings built their ship as he possibly could, he even used the same tools as our ancestors used. In 1982 the Norwegians found a Viking ship in Gokstad, Norway, and The Icelanders is an exact replica of that ship, so it is pretty accurate. The Icelander is 23 metres long and 5,25 metres wide and 18 tons of wood. In 2000 Gunnar and his crew (9) sailed the Icelander to Greenland and from there to North-America, the same route as Leifur Eiríksson, the 11th century Viking (who discovered America) sailed back then. Their voyage took 110 days and they stopped at 25 ports where the ship was greated with a ceremony in each port! They have now built an exhibition building for The Viking ship and The Smithsonian Viking exhibition just down by the sea right next to where The Viking ship is now situated. The exhibition will open in May 2009. There are plans on building 2 more viking ships like The Icelander. Stekkjarkot: These are typical turf-houses which could be seen all around the Icelandic shore in earlier days. Stekkjarkot was the last inhabited turf-house in Njarđvík and people lived there with intervals from 1857-1924. It is now a museum and gives us an insight into the way people lived in Iceland. Address: Fitjar, Njarđvík, ReykjanesbćrPhone: 8942874Directions: You can see the ship from Reykjanesbraut, it is 45 km from Reykjavík and only 5 km from the airport. Coming from Reykjavík it is on your right, look out for Kaffitár-café.Website: www.atom.is/viking/facts/index.html Other Contact: vikingship@simnet.is

by Sharrie After having examined the combination of minerals in the water, scientists declared the BLUE LAGOON a spa. So, for those who are interested in spa (like some of my colleagues & their spouses), you'll be happy to know that the Blue Lagoon now offers spa packages & you can choose between energy, balance & nutrition treatments! Rejuvenate & enjoy! Leave a Comment Phone: 420 8800

Gullfoss by Sharrie One of the most beautiful waterfall I've come across. In order to see its magnificence, click on the photo to see the bigger picture. Of course, the only way one could feel the absolute beauty of it is to be there & see it with your own eyes! Leave a Comment

Pingvellir by Sharrie Pingvellir: Opened in 1928 & lies in the heart of a 50 sq. km national park. This is where the first sitting of the Althingi (Icelandic Parliament) was held in 930. It's a very important historic site to the Icelanders. Leave a Comment

Pingvellir by Sharrie Pingvellir also links all the important dates in the history of Iceland. Notably are the year 1000 where the old gods were given a send-off here when Christianity was introduced; the year 1262 where the Icelanders declared their loyalty to the Norwegian crown here & the year 1874 where the nation celebrated its 1st 1000 years. In 1944, the new republic was proclaimed here as well. Leave a Comment
