Keep costs down with self-catering

by tobhamor

You're allowed to bring a certain amount of food with you into Iceland. If you want to visit this notoriously expensive country as inexpensively as you can, then bring in food with you (bearing in mind customs restrictions on meat and dairy products) and stay in hostels or guesthouses which offer a kitchen. We ate out once and it was probably the least satisfying meal of our trip.

Insect repellent won't stop midges

by tobhamor

Bring insect repellent if you have any ideas about visiting Myvatn in summer. However don't expect it to help you out at all. There are just too many of them. You're better off having some kind of thin scarf to wrap around your ears/nose/mouth.

Waterproofs!

by antoine2000

As Iceland is an island in the middle of the Atlantic, their climate can be a little damp. Whilst I was there, the weather was beautiful but I reckon we were lucky. I would pack waterproofs tho, not just for the weather, but when you get up close and personal to the many waterfalls you come across. A camera is a must. The pics on this site were taken with a SLR which contained a 1600 ISO film, fast and dramatic for taking B&W shots.

YOU LL NEED CLOTHERS FOR ALL WEATHER

by RitchiS1

Concerning the weather you need a lot , In July you can have stormy weather and temperature about 6 degrees C . You need also good movingshoes for the mountain . It depend on what you ll do there . For a tour by car , nothing . But if you move by feet then you need good maps whre you can find the rescue stations in the mountain area . If the weather is so bad !!

Layer

by annk

It is advisable to layer as weather conditions can change rapidly. Iceland is known to have a cool climate, high precipitation & strong winds. Would recommend carrying rain gear at all times. Umbrellas are questionable since it can be very windy.Janaury average temp 30F/-1CJuly average temp 52F/11CFrom what I hear, due to global warming, Iceland has been experiencing some of the best & warmest weather ever. We lucked out with temps in the 60's.

prepare for anything

by Nexus7

In the spring bring water proof stuff two pairs of shoes, rain slick, and warm jacket. you may never need it, but it's better to have it than not in the spring time. I'm sporting my layered jacket made of gortex near the spray of Gullfoss Bring polarizer for all the water reflection stuff. Most important. Bring a bottle of liquor from home to pre drink before you go out. It's cheaper that way for drinking is expensive here as anything you consume.

Packing List

by Sharrie

Clothes for all seasons. One can experience the 4 seasons well within 1 day! Lots of layers & a good windbreaker. Lots of opportunities for photography. So, bring enough films & batteries.Wide angle & zoom lens are essential.Digital camera as well. Iceland is ultra-expensive. So, lots of cash & credit cards! How expensive? Ok, a hamburger at the hotel we stayed in costs US$15!Generally meals cost about US$15 for lunch & US$30 for dinner. These are no fancy food, ok? Just the ordinary meal. For something more fanciful, consider at least US$50 per person.

Warm clothes needed

by kylamees

Use warm clothes all the year. Weather surprises all the time. They are not good surprises often. In November sun rises about 10AM and sunset is about 7PM. Short time for taking a pics on daylight. Use ISO 400 film or higher. But summer time it´s midnight sun helping You to take very interesting color pics at night :) Swimsuit is necessary all the year. There are warm thermal pools everywhere, the greatest is Blue Lagoon near the Keflavik Airport.

Packing List

I saw people suggesting that you take an eye mask to use at night and thought that they were mad, but having been there I concede that it is good advice. Our room had windows all down one side but a curtain was missing and there is something really disorientating about waking at 3am to find the sun streaming into your bedroom. I found it very difficult to get back to sleep.

Packing List

Since I went in March, I wasn't too sure how the weather was going to be. I experienced a bit of everything. Be sure to bring good clothes for layering. I had a water resistant jacket with a fleece jacket underneath it. I also brought many sweaters, but they make wonderfully warm ones. I live in mine. Boots are perfect and of course a warm hat and gloves. I lost mine during the end of my trip. I had pants that had a fleece lining and that was fine for my legs, but you might want to bring longjohns. Definitely bring your swimsuit. I know that sounds funny after listing all these items to keep you warm. You don't want to miss swimming in the geothermal pools. They are the most amazing things. Unless you are doing anything in the extreme cold or serious climbing/sporting, just bring your usuals. If you forget something, you can purchase it there.
