Nice place for a break by sue_stone On our way back to Reykjavik after touring the attractions of the Golden Circle we really fancied a coffee and a snack. We spied a road side cafe up ahead so pulled off the road to check it out. What we had discovered was a clean and bright quite nice looking roadside cafe, with large windows overlooking a picturesque river. There was a small takeaway section, selling snacks and drinks, and a cafeteria, with meals available.
It was a really nice place to take a break, and we enjoyed our coffee and possibly the largest slice of cake I have ever been served!! YUM! It is on the right hand side, heading towards Reykjavik, just before you cross a bridge.

the snack bar at Geysir by sue_stone The day we toured the attractions of the Golden Circle, we found ourselves ready for lunch after our visit to Geysir. There was a large restaurant attached to a hotel there, but we didn't want a major meal, so decided to brave the cafeteria style cafe in the car park.
There were all sorts of fast food delights on offer - from hot dogs to pizzas. We opted for a toasted ham & cheese sandwich and a hamburger, ordering at the counter and then taking a seat until our number was called out. The food wasn't anything to write home about....but it was quick and easy, and meant we could be back on the road without too much delay. Leave a Comment

warm up with a coffee after seeing this! by sue_stone After a visit to and perhaps a amphibious ride on the glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon one may be in need of refreshment. Well you are in luck, as there is a small cafe at the lagoon. The cafe serves coffee, sandwiches, cakes and other snacks, and is apparently renowned for its seafood soup. We enjoyed a coffee here after our exploration of the lagoon, as did most other visitors at the time we were there. The cafe also sells souvenirs and offers advise to tourists on other attractions in Southeast Iceland. Leave a Comment

Vikurgrill in Vik by sue_stone Most people who are travelling from Reykjavik to Southern/South Eastern Iceland will travel through Vik, and stop off here for fuel, a break and a bite to eat. The place to stop to eat is the Vikurgrill at the Esso petrol station, on the highway. There is a friendly cafe/restaurant here serving the usual roadhouse meals - burgers, hotdogs, toasted sandwiches etc.
There is plenty of seating and service was with a smile. Just order at the counter and take a seat and the ladies will deliver your meal when ready. Nothing gourmet, but does the job and gets you back on the road refreshed and ready to discover more. Every capital city should have a posh revolving restaurant with fabulous views - and Reykjavik is no exception. It has Perlan. It is located on a hill, on top of some huge water tanks, with views across the city. Perlan is a 'special occasion' type restaurant, where locals go to celebrate birthdays and tourist go to enjoy fine dining Reykjavik style. We had a romantic dinner here one night - having booked in advance a couple of weeks prior. The service was attentive and efficient and the food was delicious, though best of all was the views - we got to see all sides of the city during our meal, as the restaurant slowly revolved.
We didn't have a starter, but enjoyed tasty bread and a small complimentary appetiser. For main meal we both enjoyed the Shellfish Feast - a broth filled with delicious Icelandic shellfish, including Icelandic lobster. We enjoyed a crisp New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Alex had the Creme Brulee for dessert, washed down with loads of good coffee. Perlan is not cheap - but it's worth enjoying a special meal every now and then - even if it is not a special occasion! Reykjavik Bagel Company by bpwillet Ok so maybe this isn't exaclty a restaurant. But this coffeehouse is one of the best in Reykjavik. The atmosphere is perfect letting in as much abient light as possible. There are plenty things to read and great leather chairs to sit in and read, drink coffee, nosh on many of the sweet and savoury items for sale. It is truely a spectacular find.
The Bagel Company offers many different kinds of coffees and teas in addition to small pastries, sandwiches and salads all made right there in the kitchen. They even make their own spreads for your bagels. Tapas - bravo! by bpwillet Tapas is your typical tapas bar except everyone sits down. The menu is very extensive. You can choose to let the cooks choose for you or you can select one of their preselected versions. Or why not try mix and matching your own dishes. There are a few Icelandic variations to choose from as well. When an order is up the chef will clap his hands quite loudly - do not be alarmed. It almost seems to be in an old wine cellar but that doesn't take away at all. Outside it is lit by a neon sign and colored tiles that light up from the street.
The salted cod with cheese and artichoke was something I never thought I would try. It was one of my favorites. The lamb with fig sauce was also very good. These are some of the best dishes to try a lot of different types and share. Galileo's in the Falkahus by bpwillet Set in one of Reykjavik's historic buildings, once used for housing hawks, Galileo has a lot to impress people with. The lunch and dinner menus change a bit but offer really fresh Italian dishes. The interior is nice and clean and has great window views of Ingolfstorg, or why not sit outside. On days where the sun is in full swing, the outside tables give great views of the people passing the square.
It is funny to go to Iceland to have pizza but this was some of the best I have had. They make quite gormet pizza creations and their pasta dishes are top notch. Their creative seafood dishes are always fresh and the portions are plentiful. The price is just right as well. Icelandic Italian by bpwillet This restaurant is labeled as Italian but it is kind of local Icelandic and Italian mixed. They have fresh fish dishes of course, and their Italian dishes are great! Indoors is like the interior of an old house with roaring fires and low lighting. There are rooms upstairs as well as special catered rooms for 20, or 40 people. It is really easily located in Reykjavik so there is no need to go very far from your hotel (depending) or the city nightlife. Caruso's also offers live music on weekends, which is quite nice.
I think the pistachio encrusted salmon was good and their other meat dishes are very fine. Their house wines are also very nice. You will not go hungry here as their portions are quite ample. Viking experience - Hafnarfjordur by bpwillet Ok, if you want the "Viking" experience while in Iceland, to get your fill of traditional dress and services, the Fjorukrain is your place. This restaurant is constructed as a traditional Viking long house and has all the staff dressed up in traditional tunics and medieval viking garb. There are even mock Viking "ceremonies". It is a lot of fun and worth the trip. There is also an attached hotel, small museum and gift shop.
The food was really great here. Served in wooden trays in traditional ways the menu offers many different choices. There is a Viking Feast which includes many Icelandic delicacies of fish and vegetables. It is an all encompassing meal with starters, mains, and dessert. Many restaurants in Iceland will offer a "Viking" type menu item but none has as much character as the Fjorukrain.
