Vid fjorubordid: Best Lobster in Iceland!

by eandreev

This restaurant specializes almost exclusively in the small Icelandic lobster. Prix fix menu starts out with a phenomenally flavorful bisque. Main course is a beautiful and bountiful pot of tails sauteed with fresh herbs and butter and small potatoes. The tails come with a nice selection of dipping sauces (roasted garlic, skyr) and salad. Dessert was chocolate cake. Meal goes very well with a pitcher of Icelandic beer! Prix Fix Menu is the way to go!

Prikið: An Omelet and a Party-Place In One?

by carastar

I have never had breakfast at 9:00am at the same place where I'd have cocktails at midnight. But at Prikið you can do just that!We arrived in Reykjavik at 9:00am and after checking into the hotel we were desperate for a hot breakfast. Luckily, after walking just 5 minutes from our hotel (CenterHotel Klopp), we stumbled across this cute diner. We had omelets and lattes and they were great. Friendly and quick service and tasty food, plus loads of charm. At the weekend, when we were out prowling the clubs like the locals, we again ended up at Prikið for dancing and drinks. It was amazing! We had create-your-own omelets -- very tasty!

Bæjarins Beztu: Famous Hotdogs?

by carastar

Before going to Reykjavik, we had heard about this hot dog stand near the harbor that had the best hot dogs in the country. So of course it was where we lunched on our very first day in town. Despite the long line, and all the hype, we did not like the hot dogs at all. The only thing we could figure is that they have a slightly smokey taste that we just didn't like. Also, while traveling through extreme rural parts of the country we sometimes had no other food choices besides petrol station hot dogs. The hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu didn't seem any better than these petrol station grill hot dogs. We were disappointed, but still think that it's worth trying -- especially since this stand is so famous.

Austur-Indíafjelagið: I Would Kill For the Tandoori Salmon

by carastar

Of the 4 nights we spent in Reykjavik, we ate here 3 times. It was that good. We loved the food, the service was perfect, and the ambience is great. The guys who work there became our friends. We were lucky enough, on our third visit, to be given a complimentary sample of the tandoori salmon. I wish we had known about it from the first time we ate there! It was incredible! One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. It is a must-try. Even for people who don't care much for fish (us), it was seriously an amazing experience.

Restaurant Reykjavik: Wonderful dinner

by EllenH

The ice bar is pretty cool (hehe) The restaurant was great, we split a meal and it was more then enough. (It's ok, we left a good tip even though it is not "expected" it is appreciated.) We split a beef tenderloin filet and had a small salad and a baked potato, and roasted vegetables. It was all delicious.

Icelandic Fish & Chips: The best fish and chips

by TheCheeryCynic

Ambiance is nothing special, and the semi self-catering style is probably not appropriate for a restaurant of this cost level, but quite simply they served perhaps the best piece of fried haddock I think I've ever eaten. Far lighter, fresher, and juicier than the deep fried, heavily crusted fish fries we get here in the U.S. We ordered a sample platter of their "skyronnaise" which is an assortment of skyr based dipping sauces to compliment the fish. It was fun to do a little taste testing of all the sauces before our main courses arrived. But honestly, the skronnaise was an unneeded expense, the fish was so delicious that no sauce was needed. We saved it for our chips, which FYI are potatoes, not french fries. Get the fried haddock. You will not be disappointed.

Hressingarskalinn: Probably the best bargain restaurant downtown

by GrumpyDiver

Probably the best deal in Reykjavik, if you stick to the specials. We took a picture of the place so we could find it again if (when?) we visited Iceland again. The locals seemed to like the place too, as it was always full when we were there. The salmon and lamb specials.

Food (3/3): Prices

by Redang

Some members have asked me about the prices of food in Iceland, worried because they have heard how expensive the food and Iceland itself are. This is a list of what I really paid in August ’08:- Pizza in a restaurant in Reykjavík: 1.790 ISK- Beer in the same restaurant: 350 ISK (in this case, I really don’t remember if it was a “normal” beer or a not alcoholic one- Soup (same restaurant): 950 ISK- Pepsi in the Supermarket 10-11 in Reykjavík: 189 ISK- Two sandwiches in a gas station in Reykjavík: 305 ISK- Spagetti in a restaurant in Blonduós: 1.480 ISK- Pizza in a restaurant in Akureyri: 1.990 ISK- Beer in a restaurant in Akureyri: 320 ISK- Menu at Hotel Edda Stórutjarnir: 2.750 ISK (two dishes) + beer ( 500 ISK)- Dinner at Hotel Edda Neskaupstaður: Cod (2.450 ISK), dessert (1.050 ISK), light beer (350 ISK) - Pack of cookies in a supermarket in Reykjahlíð: 195 ISK- Coca Cola light (same...

Kókoskúlas: I'm only Going to Spell This Once

by DueSer

This isn't a restaurant - it's a delicacy to order when you go to just about any restaurant in Reykjavik. These are delightful little things - small balls of dense chocolate cake covered in chocolate and rolled in coconut. Delicious! They seem to be a staple of Icelandic desserts because I saw them several places in the city over the course of my stay. I ordered them in more than one place and they were good every place I tried them. If you're familiar with Lamingtons, these are similar but the cake is much more dense and their overall size is much smaller but the idea is about the same. They are sweet and wonderful. Order two, they're small!
