Skrudur bistro: it's where we had our breakfast buffet

by marielexoteria

My review of Skrudur is based only on the buffet breakfast, but they also serve lunch and dinner. The restaurant has a modern ambience with helpful staff. The buffet was very tasty and with a lot of things to choose from:- several kinds of cereal and müsli- several kinds of bread, including one that you make toast with- several kinds of yogurt and skyr- scrambled and boiled eggs- bacon and mini sausages- pickled herring, with and without onions- salami, ham, cheese- coffee, tea, milk and 2 kinds of fruit juice- veggiesand they also had an egg section where you could have an omelet or a fried egg prepared to your taste. We came to eat at different times between their breakfast serving (between 4:30 and 10am) and we always found plenty of food.If the breakfast isn't included in the hotel rate, then it costs 1800 ISK to eat there (as of May 2008). Lunch and dinner menus available on the site...

Prikid: good food with a diner feeling

by marielexoteria

Prikid (pronounced Prikith) was the first place we went to eat at. They are located in one of the oldest coffeehouses in Reykjavik and serve light meals, hamburgers, sandwiches, and soups among others. The building has 2 floors. The ground floor gives the feeling of stepping in a US Diner (I've never stepped into one so my comparison is based on what I've seen from movies, sorry if it's inaccurate) with old B&W photos, the seats by the window, the retro bar and even the music. The second floor has a more modern decoration as far as I could see.The restaurant caters locals and tourists. Their menus are written in Icelandic and English and the staff speaks good English (with a cute, little Brittish accent I might add ;)). Observe that the menu at the restaurant has more dishes than the one on their website. We went to eat here twice and I had (1) their Italian burger and (2) a daily...

Red Chili: Good Mexican with big portions!

by marielexoteria

Whenever we visit a city, Mr. Sweden and I look for a place where to have meat. Red Chili was our choice in Iceland based on the online menu and their prices...and little did we know that while the restaurant isn't cheap, you do get your money's worth! They have big portions of well cooked and seasoned food!!!Now, aside from the food, they have a Latin/Mexican theme at the restaurant. There are old photos (those I remember are B&W but they might have color ones too) and memorabilia hanging on the walls. Latin American music is played at the right volume for talking or listening while having a beer or eating. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend and go back myself if I visit Reykjavik again. Mr. Sweden had the pepper steak and he says that it was perfectly prepared to his taste: medium rare. He absolutely loved it. I ordered the BBQ ribs but my portion was so big, I...

Icelandic Fish & Chips - organic bistro: Fish and Chips Icelandic style!

by datapanik

There are many dining options in Reykjavik and many that also require deep pockets but I was curious to try the Icelandic version of fish and chips so I headed for a restaurant in the harbour area that is simply called icelandic fish & chips. Rather strangely, cod was off the menu (a sign of the times for the over-fished cod perhaps) so we settled for haddock and another white fish called tusk which turned out to be absolutely delicious. This came in a light fluffy batter accompanied by saute potatoes cooked in olive oil, parsley and Maldon salt and a green salad. A selection of Skyr yoghurt dips makes a great side dish. Certainly a little more expensive than it would be at home but very reasonable for Reykjavik and very tasty. Helpful and friendly service too.

Saegreiffin: The most incredible eating experience

by ATLC

Unique eating experience in a little blue shack down at the harbour in Reykjavik. You simply can't get more local than here. In fact, it's all Icelandic spoken. But that doesn't matter. You can point things out, can't you?Or order 'humarsupa' and don't forget to say Takk fyrir (thank you).Open daily from 8-18 hrs. A confession here. My most favourite dish was a whale saschlick. If you've ever eaten the most juicy, luscious steak, then think again. Whale, prepared on a barbecue, is two, three times as delicious as the best steak you've ever eaten. I will probably never eat whale again, because it's forbidden and unavailable almost every where in the world, but I'm sure I will remember this heavenly eating experience the rest of my life. And the famous lobster soup is out of this world as well. Getting your bowl at the counter, with a bit of bread, you can sit inside on a fish barrel and...

Caruso: Excellent Italian Food

by dooleygeo

Lovely Italian restaurant in downtown Reykjavik. The entire staff was nice and the food was fantastic. We were there for a late lunch and had the place to ourselves. They put us next to a window so we could sit and watch people go by. I had the jumbo shrimp risotto which was found under the light courses. Very good.

Sel-Hótel Myvatn cafeteria: Skútustadír

Here you can see the Marimo Ball in an aquarium. We ate an excellent Icelndic traditional meat soup (made with lamb) for 950 IKR, and Hervabred (bread baked underground using geothermal heat) with smoked trout for 450 IKR.

Floral Dining Room at the Loftleider: Don't Miss the Seafood!

by starship

Part of our stopover package was 2 breakfasts and a dinner during our short stay in Reykjavik. I remember being astounded that we went up to a replica of a small Viking boat to get our salad and some other appetizers! The dining room at the Loftleider Hotel was rather plain and on the modern side but very pleasant in any case. The server was very helpful and friendly. Our menu was "fixed" and thank heaven, it was printed in both the Icelandic language but also English! Our dinner of soup, salad, seafood entree and dessert with beverages was less than $10 each!! The whole meal was very good. It was my first time for trying the somewhat chewy Monkfish.

Hakarl: Local Delicacy

by Jim_Eliason

This local treat is not for the weak stomached. Its putrified shark. Its prepared by burying the shark for 3 months in sand then exposing it to dry in the open ari for a few more months. It smell horrible but does not have much taste. I would describe is as a sea salt gummy for lack of better description.
