Pylsur - Icelandic Hotdogs!: Icelandic Fast Food is a Godsend!

by M0B1US

Fancy grabbing a bite to eat but not remortgage the house?Well head for a hotdog stand as these are the guaranteed cheapest places to eat, short of buying your grub in a supermarket...They are all over the place in Reykjavik and although not the healthiest option for your waistline - they certainly are for your wallet! Erm, Hotdogs! Two good places are Bæjarins Bestu Pylsur, which is a Hotdog trailer by the harbour downtown, and Hlolla Batar in the downtown square.Called Pylsur in Iceland. They are made out of lamb. Typical condiments are remoulade sauce, a special sweet-hot pylsur mustard, and fried onions. So technically you are enjoying Icelandic cuisine! ;-)These places are literally open 24hrs - just like the legendary Icelandic nightlife!Very tasty too!

Thrir Frakkar: Seafood

by isolina_it

This is an expensive but good restaurant in Reykjavik. Being on honeymoon, we decided to have at least a very nice dinner and after having heard about a couple of recommended restaurants we chose this and it was pretty satisfying. The atmosphere is nice and the people are nice. Well, we had cod and catfish but we also had smoked puffin. Actually when after a couple of days from the dinner I saw these cute animals alive I felt pretty bad....:).Anyway, everything delicious.

Kebab Husið: Fish and chips in Reykjavik

by isolina_it

Considered how expensive is food in general cafes or restaurants we ended up eating here a couple of times. But I have to admit this place is pretty decent and good. They have doners and all sorts of burgers but I always got the fish and chip: tasty and big portion with salad! FISH AND CHIPS

Sægreifinn: Great lobster soup

by isolina_it

This is a very tiny place for locals, it is non-pretentious serves good food in plastic cups.It is run by a fisherman that speaks almost no english but he understands lobster soup and drinks. LOBSTER SOUP! There was some cat-fish on the barbecue, we didn`t try but it looked delicious.

Grillhusid: Great burgers!

by willhaigh

My Icelandic friend and I went here on my last night in town. Very informal place with great burgers and fries. Seems to be a favorite of the locals, as I felt like I was the only tourist there! The burgers were great and, by Icelandic standards, the prices were great too. Two burgers with fries and two Cokes - around $36.00US - a real bargain in Reykjavik!

Jomfruin: Salmon so fresh I think it just came off the boat!

by willhaigh

Jomfruin specializes in Danish open-faced sandwiches called Smorrebrod. I selected the smoked salmon version complete with scrambled egg, dill, and lemon. I swear, the salmon was 3/4 inch thick and so fresh and moist that it seemed as though it was caught and smoked just for me. This is a very popular place in a very highly traveled location so, the people-watching is great too.

Vikurgrill: Dining on route from to Skaftafell - at Vik

by sue_stone

Most people who are travelling from Reykjavik to Southern/South Eastern Iceland will travel through Vik, and stop off here for fuel, a break and a bite to eat.The place to stop to eat is the Vikurgrill at the Esso petrol station, on the highway. There is a friendly cafe/restaurant here serving the usual roadhouse meals - burgers, hotdogs, toasted sandwiches etc. There is plenty of seating and service was with a smile. Just order at the counter and take a seat and the ladies will deliver your meal when ready. Nothing gourmet, but does the job and gets you back on the road refreshed and ready to discover more.

Dining on route - between Reykjavik and Selfoss: Dining on route - between Reykjavik and Selfoss

by sue_stone

On our way back to Reykjavik after touring the attractions of the Golden Circle we really fancied a coffee and a snack. We spied a road side cafe up ahead so pulled off the road to check it out. What we had discovered was a clean and bright quite nice looking roadside cafe, with large windows overlooking a picturesque river. There was a small takeaway section, selling snacks and drinks, and a cafeteria, with meals available. It was a really nice place to take a break, and we enjoyed our coffee and possibly the largest slice of cake I have ever been served!!YUM!

We stopped here for coffee, although they do serve food as well. it was only 250 ISK for a full french press and was delicious. A great place to sit outside and people watch or be watched...either way. No photo, sorry.
