Thermal Baths

by redsaga

There are many heated pools, hot pots and jacuzzis in Reykjavík and many of them are outdoors. A very icelandic thing to do is to jump (ok, not jump but walk) between the hot pots, starting with the coolest and advance to the more hot ones when the body has gotten used to the heat. Going to the thermal baths is a very nice way of relaxing after a busy day shopping or doing touristy stuff.

The Golden Circle

by tvdm

Technically not Reykjavik (and according to the locals not very Icelandic anymore either), but we made day trip around the Golden Circle and visited the Geysír and Þingvellir Park. Some roads were closed and/or in a terrible state so we didn't make it to the Gullfoss waterfall (pic) in the end, but it was great fun nonetheless! See the travelogues for all the snowy pictures.

Asmundarsafn

by Bjorgvin

The Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum is dedicated to the works of the sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982). Asmundur Sveinsson was one of the pioneers of Icelandic sculpture. The Museum building was designed and built mostly by the artist himself from 1942 to 1950. The artist donated the house and his collection to the City of Reykjavik after his day, and a museum dedicated to his memory was opened in 1983. Surrounding the museum is a sculpture garden, adorned with sculptures by Mr. Sveinsson. - See travelouge.Opening hours:May-September 10-16,October-April 13-16 Every day except on Christmas and New Years day

The Nordic House

by Bjorgvin

The Nordic Culture House in Reykjavík was opened in 1968. The house was designed by the world famous Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976). He even designed the furniture in the café and the original bookshelves in the library. This Nordic cultural centre was to serve as a link between Iceland and the other Nordic countries and has done so excellently over the years. The Nordic House organizes an extensive program of cultural events and exhibitions and maintains a library, which is an essential part of the Nordic house. There is a gallery in the basement of the house where numerous exhibitions of Nordic art are held. The ground floor houses the library, a small café and a small concert hall.Websites on Alvar Aalto:http://www.greatbuildings.com/architects/Alvar_Aalto.htmlhttp://www.jkl.fi/aalto/http://www.scandinaviandesign.com/alvar_aalto/http://www.aalto.com/

2) More on the Blue Lagoon

by Saagar

cont'd from tip 1):There is one parking space, one entrance (smack in the middle of lava fields, so sneaking in from anywhere is at your own peril!), a reception where the questions are how many persons, need a towel, bathing suit? and you get a moisturizer to apply after the soak (quite salty, really dries you out). Your ticket is a plastic armband with some kind of chip that serves to lock and unlock your locker in the changing rooms. Self explanatory, but takes some time to figure out. Nothing can go wrong, though. After paying you choose men/women, and then there are several color-coded sections with locker and changing rooms, leave your shoes outside (space for them). Leave anything of metal as even gold will corrode in this water. Remember your section of changing room, go for the lagoon via shower rooms (yep, do take a shower) and you are a few steps from the entry point to the...

New years eve in Iceland

by icelandphotoblog

Hi Simon, first I would recommend to take a whole day to go what is called the golden circle. That tour will take you to Þingvellir, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir. Northern lights are normally best viewed between 22:00 - 02:00 local time and you need a warm cloths because it gets really cold over the night. Now, what to do on New years eve... well it depends but I highly recommend that you see bonfire which are normally located on same places year after year. Can see map here " http://dev.innri.reykjavik.is/Portaldata/1/Resources/svid_og_deildir/framkvaemdasvid/frettir/innri_frettir_2007/aramotabrennur07.pdf " for last year bonfires around Reykjavík. Normally they starts around 20:00 local time.People starts firing up their fireworks around 23:00 but the real show starts 00:00 when the sky will be covered with fireworks! Best viewpoints are Perlan or being in Breiðholt at a good place,...

Modern Viking ship

by nomadig

In Reykjavik shorefront, not far from the city center -- nothing is far from anything in Reykjavik -- sits a commanding Viking ship statue. Made of metal, this modernised version of the ships Vikings used to conquer a big part of the northern hemisphere back then is a sight worth not missing. The statue, named Sun Voyager, is made by artist Jon Gunnar Arnason. The ship looks very dramatic, and gives a lot of photo opportunities; either with your family or friends, or just the statue with dramatic Icelandic nature on the background. The best time to visit the status is either early morning or late evening on a clear day, when the last rays of sun make the statue turn reddish. We were not that lucky, so you can enjoy only rainy photo. On the other hand, the small water drops on the metal surface were pretty interesting...

Trout fishing

by sokratex

In the lake called Reynisvatn, a 10 minutes drive from downtown Reykjavik, one can go fishing for rainbow trout. The lake is managed and a license for 5 fish can be bought for around 35 €.Fishing equipment and boat can be rented so the fun can start without any hassle. The fish in the lake is from around 2-15 pounds. Overall a beautiful way to relax and enjoy your time in Reykjavik.

Austrovollur

by clouds111

Austrovollur is a square in the old town where the first settler Ingolfur Arnarson had his hayfields. There's a stature in the centre of the square of the nationalist that led the campaign for Icelandic independance. Around the square is Alpingi the home of Icelandic parliament and the old church Domkirkja and the art deco Hotel Borg. The square became a bit of an ice rink which was fun after a night out on the town!

Flea Market

by clouds111

There is a large flea market that takes place at Tryggvagata down by the harbour every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year, from 11am-5pm, where you can buy almost anything - clothes, books, jewellery, souveniers and food/snacks. You will also find a few stalls in the food quarter where you can get some Hakarl, the Icelandic delicacy of putrid shark meat... I didn't try any. The most pleasant thing about the market is the prices, although more than the average flea market around the world, by Icelandic standards it's cheap!
