Gullfoss Waterfall

by maryellen50

One of Iceland's most famous natural wonders is Gullfoss, or “Golden Falls.” With a 105-foot double-cascade, Gullfoss is Europe’s most powerful waterfall. On a sunlit day, the mist clouds surrounding the hammering falls are filled with dozens of rainbows, providing an unparalleled spectacle of color and motion. This is part of the "Golden Circle' tour of the Reykjavik area.

Fishery industry museum at Grindavik

by Saagar

Saltfiskur Islands is a museum wholly dedicated to the preparation of salt fish. If it sounds odd, never think so. Ever had bacalao? This is where that process starts, from fresh to salted cod, and the whole town has apparently at some time or the other been totally dedicated to this. The museum shows the whole process from catch to export. If you're in the neighbourhood - such as the Blue Lagoon - droping by is no big deal.

Whale watching

by Saagar

There are plenty of possibilities for whale watching on Iceland, and the sea outside Reykjavik is considered a good place for it. I went on the Hafsulan boat ran by Reykavik Whale Safari and Puffin Island. I found it too big and crowded and the service limited. Hot drinks for free would have been a great pre. It gets very cold out there and the offer in the bar was very expensive.Yes, we saw whales allright; minke, dolphins. Many birds, too, and the puffins were resident on Puffin Island. A successful trip in this sense. The weather was excellent during the entire trip, but it still gets windy and cold from the speed of the boat and summers are not tropical on Iceland... The PA commentary sort of ran out of things to say as there weren't that much to see after all, and the minkes were rather distant. The harbour facilities with a showroom ("The Whale Centre") in the hull of a moored ship...

3) Blue Lagoon: The Blue Lagoon SPA

by Saagar

You can have a professional massage and spa treatmetns at the Blue Lagoon. They offer 14 varieties/treatments and most of it seemed great. However, I'd leave out the pregancy massage from my "things-to-do" at the SPA. There is also a chance of children 6-11 to have a massage here - 15 minutes. For prebooking, ordering, enqiry, try the web site and email address.

Visit Kleifarvatn

by Saagar

Due south of Raykjavik city, take off from the southbound Keflavik road just beyond Hafnarfjordur centre and head for the south coast on a minor, gravelly (soon!) road that passes through a very active geological area. It's a national park, and apart from the geothermal stuff at Kvisuvik and the southern end of Kleifarvatn, it is the Kleifarvatn itself that is the main attraction for amateurs. Desolate landscape, a lake mirroring surrounding volcanic debris and cliffs - stark and beautiful. Yes, bring a Björk tape to play while here - haunting. If you have an idea of the volcanic activities here - read up before you go - the outcome of this trip is secured. Upon departing south from Kleifarvatn, you can choose to go either east or west, looping back up north toward Reykjavik again. Most interesting route is to the west (right), either backtracking on a parallel road on the other side of...

Grindavik's statue of the bereaved

by Saagar

Grindavik south on the Reykajnes peninsula (15 minutes from the Blue Lagoon) has an impressive and emotional memorial for those who were left at sea in accidents, and the sculpture depicts those bereaved. A source for afterthought and consideration of the traditional hard life of the Icelanders. Right near the Saltfisktur house and Brim restaurant.Inside the Brim restaurant are several photos of local fishing vessels in stormy weather.

Your own, personal volcano?

by Saagar

The area south of Keflavik and Reykjavik - Reykjanes, basically, has several dead volcanoes worth a climb. They are mostly shield volcanoes with small craters on top of a smallish cone. Fun to visit. You find the easiest climbable ones just a couple of kilometres out of Reykjanesviti along the road toward Keflavik. look for map and roadside names such as stampar.

1) Blue Lagoon - not a tourist trap!!!!!

by Saagar

Everybody told me to go here before I went to Iceland - and such uniform advice makes me doubt the advice... So it took me a few days and a very dusty and sweaty day touring Reykanes to finally succumb to pressure and go.I am now among those thousands recommending the place! The commercial profile is very low key, and the entry fee (ISK 1500) is well worth it. There are no water slides, toy things or anything to do apart from SPA sort of treatment, a post-soak cafe or restaurant and a souvenir shop and skin treatment shop - you basically wade around and soak. You can swim, but it is not deep enough for diving in from the sides, it's all wading deep. You can wade to a place where you find a temperature that suits you. Essentially it is a massive hot tub. There are so may reviews of the place that I will only tell you the how-to:Take a designated bus from Keflavik or the city to the Blue...

Swimming around in warm water

by Travmad

This is a nice diversion from the hectic life in Reykjavik. Where you can swim in not so deep water that is feed by the power plant that you can see across the water as it hisses out steam into the air. In the past few years there has been a visitors center added as well as sectioned off pools to swim in. When I first went to the Lagoon it was an interesting experience. There was a changing room and you went out the back to the pool where there was a rope showing the limits where it was safe to swim. you had to swim through cold then to hot water where it was being pumped out of the plant. That was cool. Sort of free style adventure.

A Warm Dip on a Cold Day

by yooperprof

I guess you could go to the Blue Lagoon in the summer time and still enjoy the full pleasure of a soothing mineral bath. The mud will still feel good on your face, the waterfall will give your body a therapeutic pounding, the water will still be warmer than the air. But - come on, you really don't experience the FULL Blue Lagoon treatment unless you visit in the winter, preferably on a cold and sleety day. YOU KNOW you really want to. The water temperature: around 100 Fahrenheit. The air temperature: 38 Fahrenheit. The skies cloudy, with intermittent sleet providing a cooling shower.Nothing in my recent travel history was more RELAXING, more HEALTHFUL, more RE-ENERGIZING than my visit to the Blue Lagoon pools and spa in Iceland. This was the perfect way to end my (short) visit to Iceland, and to prepare my return to the daily and ordinary world of work and household chores and the daily...
