Film about Volcanoes

by TheSentinel

There is a small cinema run by the filmmaker (Mr Knudsen) which shows a film of one hour in length about the volcanoes. He has been filming them for the last 40 years or so. It is an amateurish film but the footage is very interesting, especially on the creation of Surtsey (a small island to the SOuth of Iceland created by volcano in 1963).

Born from Iceland’s Otherworldly Landscape

by ukmagicman

Easily the most photographed site in all of Iceland, The Blue Lagoon is perhaps the most supernatural looking body of water on Earth. The temperature in the swimmable area averages about 40C (104F), and the soothing, mineral-rich water is rumored to have curative powers. Though the lagoon looks like something born from Iceland’s otherworldly landscape, it is actually man made. It was created by run-off from the Svartsengi power plant, which pumps up the geothermally heated water from a full mile below the surface. The blue lagoon is a must see... if you want a romantic trip then visit the lagoon at night. The outdoor temperature might be below freezing, but you do not notice it when submerged in the the lagoon or hiding away in the geothermal caves.

Childrens Zoo and Park

by Acirfa

We spent just half an hour here, visiting it because it was right behind our hotel. Really intended for tiny tots and their parents and with a lot left to be desired with the conditions of the pens for the animals.

Thingvellir

by Acirfa

A place of beauty and history. This site is situated between the opening of an Earthquake area, no mans land almost. It is where the Asian and American plates meet and each year Iceland grows 2cm because of this geological fact.Thingvellir was a parliamentary site for the Vikings. The speaker would stand on the Law Rock to voice his words to Parliament who were congregated in the valley below. Here is sited the largest lake in Iceland, the water running through the rifts into the lake are as clear as glass. There is a quaint white church that holds such value to the Icelandic people that any visiting members of parliament etc are taken here for a visit. Right next to the church is a burial ground for prestigious folk although two poets of Iceland also managed to take a resting place in these grounds.

Hveragerdi

by Acirfa

Although we only passed through this village, stopping at the shop for a browse,it is worth mentioning. It is called the Green House village as it is situated on a 'hot spot' making it the perfect place to grow cucumbers and tomatoes. A small village about 45 mins from Reykjavik itself.(The pic is not of Hveragerdi, but is pretty all the same!)

Gulfoss Falls

by Acirfa

A magnificent scene, this amazingly picturesque place is truly wonderful. You could almost feel the force of the water rushing over the edge of the cliff just from the spray from spray and thunderous sound hitting us. This is a must when visiting Reykjavik.

Geysers

by Acirfa

We travelled two hours or so out of Reykjavik to Geysir, the name of the place belies it's treasure. Featuring a show of bubbling natural mineral hot pots which spurted their contents, 50/60 ft into the air every 4 to 7 mins, just as if from a whales blow hole. Following this burst of energy comes a slow drift of steam across the atmosphere. These release valves of the Earth have the stench of sulphur and are arranged with colours so striking they are mesmarizing.Apart from the geysers, there is a shop with a small geological explanation area, gifts, food and a picture window where you can sit and view the geysers.

The World second largest Geyser

by castersugar43

We join the Golden Triangle trip and the Geysir is one of the places included in the tour. The tour last for whole day and it is worth to join as it includes several must see places in Iceland. There are three Geysers. The one which bursts quite often is the medium Geyser. The largest one in Iceland only bursts three times a day.

The Icelandic Horses are nice!

by castersugar43

If you are interested in riding horse, you should try the trip which include riding the Icelandic horse! As we just stayed in Iceland for four days, we didn't have enough time to do so. However, the guide of the Golden Triangle trip stopped by a farm and showed us the Icelandic horses. They came to us and let us touched them!!!

Gulfoss Waterfall

It is the one of the destinations that the Golden Traiangle trip included. The waterfall is so big and the view there is spectacular. You can walk closely to the water. You should be very careful as the ground is slippery!
