Grundarfjörður is a thriving fishermen town on the norther coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula. This is a nice and quiet town set amongst beautiful landscapes, with the impressive Mt. Kistufell as the highlight.
The town has a camping ground, a hostel and a swimmingpool. Inhabitants are little less than 1000.
The picture is of Grundarfjörður and Mt. Kistufell in the background. I borrowed it from a local hotel's website.
On the way between Búðir and Arnarstapi there is a sign on the road marked Rauðfeldsgjá. From the road there is a short walking distance up to this crack in Mt. Botnsfjall. A stream runs through the crack.
In the latter part of the summer you can walk into this gorge and view its amazing world. It requires some climbing and you need to bring waterproof clothes and boots.
We didn't manage to get to the bottom of the gorge because on the way you have to climb this waterfall and we didn't have good enough shoes.
Even if you are not well equipped take a look inside the first part of the gorge it is amazing. Small children and sensitive people might not like the sight of dead birds that lie in the path so be prepared.
The swimmingpool at Lýsuhóll is not your ordinary Icelandic swimmingpool. It has a pool and a hot pot but its unique qualities is the water. This is a mineral water from a nearby well and its compostition is supposed to be very healthy. Actually it is a similar composition as in the waters of Baden-Baden in Germany.
The pool is a little bit slimy and the facilities are rustic but its still an enjoyble experience to soak in the water knowing that all your illnesses are being cured.
