A very special light

by toonsarah

As a photographer I was constantly struck by the truly amazing light here in Iceland. Two of our three days here were crisp and sunny, and there seemed to be a glow about the landscape that I’ve never seen elsewhere. Whether this is the case year-round I can’t say (but we will surely return to find out), but it meant that we were continually looking for places where we could pull over, jump out of the car, and fire off a few shots, just to capture a view even more beautiful than the last! My abiding memory of our short visit will be this special light, to which the photos can only do a limited amount of justice. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy them at least a fraction as much as I loved taking them.+++Next tip!+++

Sunrise at the Ranga Hotel

by toonsarah

The sun rises late in Iceland in February – around 10.00 am. On our first morning at Ranga it was shrouded in clouds, but on the second, as we sat over breakfast, a beautiful red glow appeared in the sky above the notorious (for its 2010 antics) volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, which can be seen from the dining room here. As soon as we had finished eating we headed back to our room and grabbed our cameras, which were still attached to the tripods ready for the Northern Lights that again had failed to appear. Out of the door onto our small patio, and down to the river, where we had the perfect spot from which to take these photos. The tripods came in very useful as they allowed us to use a low ISO and shutter speed to do the scene justice without too much graininess. But the next day when we had a similarly spectacular sky I went out again, this time without the tripod, and because it was a...

Patterns in the ice ... and more

by toonsarah

So how come even the ice in Iceland seemed more interesting than at home?! I found lots of examples like these, where puddles (these were at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss respectively) had frozen and fractured into such pretty patterns which stood out clearly against the dark soil. And while your camera is pointing downwards, why not look out too for the delicate greens of the different mosses that carpet the land here, or maybe a strand of seaweed glowing against the background of a black lava beach? +++Next tip!+++

Strange rock formations in Mt. Ingólfsfjall.

by Regina1965

I refer to my tip here on Mt. Ingólfsfjall under "things to do" - this tip is just a sub-tip on strange rock formations in the mountain. They stand out as you drive on ring-road 1. I remember my grandfather telling me that these rocks were different as Mt. Ingólfsfjall was under the ocean aeons ago. I don´t know if this is the right explanation? The place where these strange grey rock formations are located is called Silfurberg. It is a zeolite type of rock called skólesit in Icelandic.Opposite this particular place in Mt. Ingólfsfjall is a hill called Kögunarhóll and that is where all the white crosses are located (see my tip). It is midway between the towns of Hveragerði and Selfoss.

A summer cottage in the middle of a rock slide.

by Regina1965

There is a summer cottage located in a very strange place by the roots of Mt. Ingólfsfjall. You will spot it on your left hand side as you turn off ring-road 1 onto road 35. It is built in between big chunks of rocks which have fallen from the mountain in earth-quakes.I have to say that I think that the owners of this summer cottage are very brave - as this area is known for earth-quakes and the last big earth-quake originated from below Mr. Ingólfsfjall in 2008 - 6,3 on the Richter scale. At that time there was a rock slide as well, but the summer cottage was not damaged.Look out for it when you are in this area - it is a really strange sight.

Me & Nik...

by coceng

This would be my last photo in Jokulsarlon...Me & Nik posing for the camera...After this photo was taken, we would have 1 hour before the bus came for me to be back to Hofn.Me & Nik decided to walk to the sea shore, for him to take some photos; Only him did so as I had enough of the sights when I was there on my own. I was showing him the peacefulness of that area & we were there for 30 minutes enjoying the air...enjoying the sights."That's enough Nik ! We have to get back on our feet or we miss the bus !", I assured him...Later when the bus came, Nik decided to take the bus instead of paddling his bike, in reaching Hofn, again he's being cheeky !

Jokulsarlon Ferry...

by coceng

Thought you guys would be interested in this...We can actually 'cruise' the icebergs in the river by taking this excursion on the Jokulsarlon ferry, as you can see on my photo.Unfortunately, I didn't have enough Icelandic money to take the ride, there's no bank in the area ! Nobody could change me the money also...so, just this photo for myself & for you guys !

My Memory Around Jokulsarlon...

by coceng

Now, I was back to the 'civilization', where there are many people loitering around the place...Instead of taking photos of them, I took some snaps of the plants found in the area.Just don't me their names....
