In 1974 Myvatn became a National Reserve of Myvatn-Laxà with the pseudocrater of Skutustadir, in the south area of the lake that became national monument. Myvatn is situate on the Middle Atlantic Ridge. Everything that you can see is made by vulcanic formation or geothermical activity, but probably the most visiting is the Myvatn lake that it is situate in a area of 37 Km2 and it is only 2.5 meters deep. The lake is nearly divide in two by the Neslandatangi Peninsula, that separate the Ytrifloi (External Gulf) from the wide Sydriflòi (Southern Gulf). In the lake there are more than 50 islands and more of them are pseudocraters originated by gas explosions from the passage of the spindle lava into the water.
Myvatn is the dryest place of Iceland thanks to Vatnajokull Glacier.

The Black Castles is one of the most beautiful landscape of Myvatn. This "castles" borned 2000 years ago from the lava throw out from Prengslaborgir crater and from Ludentsborgir crater. The lava go on the lava field of Hverfell and it found a dam and it stopped and it created a big lake of lava. When the lava cooled on the surface the dam broke and lava go away and ramain only these pillars of lava. These pillars have gor arches, cave and strange formations. One of the most interstin formation is cave call Kirkjan (the Church) because it remember a gothic cathedral. There are many paths to follow to explore this strange and beautiful place.

    Krafla craters
    by Cristian_Uluru
All the lava that you see on Krafla come from the fissure that go from north to south. From the mountain behind Leirhnjukur is possible the lava throw out during the Myvatnseldar and during the throw out of 1975, that is some point is cover by the lava of 1984 and in some place you can see again smoke come out from rocks. In the photo you can see also a small crater explode in 1984. There are also other many crater. Wonderful landscape and panorama. The place where the force of nature make the best!!!

From the car park there is a path that allow to go inside the field of lava and near some craters!

  • Krafla Geothermal Power Station - Mÿvatn
    Krafla Geothermal Power
    Station
    by Cristian_Uluru
Kroflustod is a Geothermal Power Station that was build in 1973. In this year engineers made 24 holes in the ground where the power station can take steam necessary to have electric power. The 20 th December 1975, after century the Krafla startede to throw out in some place and so the the geothermal power of the power station was reduce a lot. Today only one of the two power generator of 30 Mw go and it use only 17 holes!
Visitors can visit the power station every day, and it is many interesting to see how is possible to have power from the steam come from the centre of the Earth. The staff of the power station is very helpfully!!!.)

    Viti
    by Cristian_Uluru
The name of this big explosion craters, wide 320 meters, mean hell. Viti is only one of the many mouthes of the Krafla vulcano that created the Fire of Myvatn (Myvatnseldar) in 1724. The eruptions needed 5 years to create this crater, and now Viti is consider inactive. Behind the crater there are two twin lake, solfatares that during Myvatnseldar they thrown mud to the hight of 10 meters!!!

    by Cristian_Uluru
Leirhnjùkuri is one of the best attractive of Krafla. This crater borned in 1727. It started like a fountain of lava and it erupted for about 2 years before to stop. After another small eruption in 1746 became a mud lake encrust by sulphur.
From the car park there is a path that go to Leirhnjùkur and along the path you can see the breth on the colored mountain.

Hverarond is a geothermal area at east of Namafjall. You can see lake of mud, solfatares, hot water and smoke. Visitors can visit everything but they must go on the path and they don't allow to pass the repes near the paths. A fantastic place!!!!

P.S. Most photos about this place on travelogue.

    Pseudocraters
    by Cristian_Uluru
From the pseudocraters borned more of the islands of lake Myvatn and also some hill to the south coast of the lake. This craters borned when the lava throw out from the craters at east of the lake go until the water of the lake. Here the water boiled and broke the surface of the lava and it created small cones and craters. The most big craters are 300 meters wide and they are situated to Vindbelgjarfjall, on the west coast of the lake. The small ones are only 2 meters wide.
