Örlygsstaðabardagi - the biggest battle in Iceland

by Regina1965

Örlygsstaðabardagi "The battle at Örlygsstaðir" in Skagafjörður was the biggest battle ever in Iceland. It took place by Örlygsstaðir in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjörður on August 21st, 1238 when the Viking clan Sturlungar fought against the clans Haukdælir and Ásbirningar. The main chieftain Vikings in Sturlungar clan were Sighvatur Sturluson and his son Sturla. The main chieftain Vikings in the latter clans were Gissur Þorvaldsson (see my tip on Flugumýri) and Kolbeinn ungi Arnórsson. These were the most powerful Viking clans in Iceland. Ca 2.800 men fought in Örlygsstaðabardagi battle, 1.200 Sturlungar and 1.600 Haukdælir and Ásbirningar.56 men got killed in this battle, amongst them was the chieftain Sighvatur Sturluson from Grund in Eyjafjörður, and his 4 sons. Haukdælir and Ásbirningar won the battle. There is an Information sign and a parking lot by Örlygsstaðir and you can walk up to a...

Dimmuborgir

by Maria81

Where? In the north of Iceland, east of lake Myvatn. As with Myvatn, visit by car from Akureyri, and you can take one of Icelandair's small flights to Akureyri if you're staying in Reykjavik. Interestingly, it's right on the border between the American and the Eurasian tectonic plates, so you can stand with one foot in America and the other in Europe! What?Dimmuborgir (or 'dark cities') is a field of lava formations dating back to an eruption ca. 2,300 years ago - and is full of lava pillars, arches, fissures from which bubbles are still emitted, etc. The more famous ones have names - like the 'church' (cave with both sides open and a dome-shaped roof) or a series of 'castles' (being large enough to shelter a grown-up person). Dimmuborgir is best visited by following one of the designated walking trails, ranging from 15-minute Little Circle to the Crooked Path of 40-45 minutes. If you can...

Lake Myvatn

by Maria81

Where? In the north of Iceland, not far from the Krafla volcano and Akureyri - Iceland's second largest city. it can be visited by car if staying in Akureyri. If you're based in Reykjavik, consider flying to Akureyri first. What?Iceland's largest lake was created over 2,000 years ago in a lava eruption and is one of the country's most popular attractions. It's a paradise if you're a bird-watcher, as there are numerous species of ducks and Eiders - the most interesting feature perhaps is that the local bird population is a mixture of European and North American ones, reflecting Iceland's position at the junction of the two continents. There is also excellent fishing if you're into it (Salmon and Trout, mostly). And for those not so much into wildlife, the Lake is an excellent base to explore some of the local natural wonders, including Dimmuborgir lava formations and Namaskard geothermal...

Hengifoss waterfall - tip dedicated to my father.

by Regina1965

The Hengifoss waterfall is located next to Lagarfljót lake and faces Hallormsstaðarskógur. It is a beautiful waterfall 118 meters high and the 3rd highest waterfall in Iceland. It drops into a beautiful gorge Hengifossárgljúfur. It is possible to walk behind it when there is not too much water in the waterfall and behind it is a small cave. What makes it extra beautiful are special rock layers of red clay sandwiched between layers of basalt. There is another waterfall a little beneath Hengifoss which is called Litlanesfoss and falls into a columnar basalt setting. It is not visible from the road. The hike is about 1,5 hours and I was only able to walk half-way up and thus not able to see that waterfall this time up close. The 2 km hike is not easy and most people give up by the bench which was obviously put there for that reason. It looks really easy from the road and looks close enough,...

Whale & Bird watching boat trips

by MikeBird

From the main harbour in Reykjavik you will find several companies offering whale watching trips in big and small boats for varying lengths of time.We chose to go with Elding as it departed at midday and lasted for several hours, journeying into the bay called Faxaflói. This was the first week of July so there was no worries about it becoming dark on our return. In fact we were lucky with the weather - crystal blue sky, light wind and consequently very little swell or rocking of the boat. This company has a small exhibition boat permanently moored in the dock. This serves to whet your appetite with information about the marine life likely to be seen on the trip. It also provides an opportunity for the visitor to buy souvenirs of their trip.My son and I really enjoyed the voyage. The guide was excellent at spotting whales and shouting enthusiastically as to which direction, "11o'clock" or...

'Must see' Day trips in Iceland

by MikeBird

I've recently returned from a week long trip to Iceland. I hired a car for a few days and then went on a coach trip another day. The car we hired was a small Toyota Yaris and we used it to do the Golden Circle which is perfectly achievable in one day from Reykjavik. The Golden Circle trip involves at least 3 stopping points. Most people visit Þingvellir - which is the seat of the ancient government - to be honest not much to see but if the weather is kind it's an attractive spot and there is a nice waterfall ( the first of many you will come across in Iceland). After that there is Geysir and the spouting hot vent called Strokkur. A little further on is the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss - absolutely not to be missed. One could travel more slowly and stay at hotels quite near to each of these 3 places but my guess is that most visitors are perfectly happy to see all 3 sites in one day....

The Blue Lagoon.

by Regina1965

The Blue Lagoon is in Reykjanes peninsula and is the most frequented tourist attraction in Iceland. More than 80% people visiting there are tourists. It is located in Grindavík town close to Keflavík airport. It is actually a discharge from the geothermal power plant, but good as such as it has healing qualities and works wonders on psoriasis and eczema. The geothermal sea-water comes from very deep wells and the temperature is ca 36-39 degrees C, hot in some places and colder in other places.Apart from that it is a really relaxing experience. The lagoon has 2 steam-baths and a sauna, an outside massage area, a small waterfall underneath which you can stand and enjoy the massage of the water. There is a café inside and outside where you can go get water and refreshment and as you leave there are two restaurants and a shop and as you go through the restaurants and up the stairs you can...

Glacier Hiking on Sólheimajökull

by SolveigPeturs

As an enthusiastic traveler myself, I want to give you some ideas what to do in my home country Iceland. One of the most astonishing thing I experienced in my own country (and not many Icelanders have seen it until now to be honest with you) was a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, a side glacier to Mýrdalsjökull. I went with the oldest Icelandic adventure tour operators Arctic Adventures on this one day trip and it was amazing. Since we got all our equipment we took our step on the glacier. After a few clumsy steps it felt almost like normal walking on a street, even though the environment around was anything else but average. Huge ice peeks, canyons and a lot of small rivers lead our way and the ash covered ice bergs told from earlier volcano eruptions. The weather was not that good unfortunately but it didn't matter at all, since we had waterproof clothes and our guide took good care of...

River Bathing in a Hot Spring

by SolveigPeturs

As an enthusiastic traveler myself, I want to give you some ideas what to do in my home country Iceland. One of the coolest things you probably can do with your friends is going on a Hot Spring Hunt in the beautiful Reykjadalur Valley, about one hour drive away from Reykjavík. Turn left somewhere before you hit Hveragerði, leave your car behind and take a nice hike down to the valley, where you will see the steam of the Hot River from far away. It's a nice scenery, and don't miss to take some good beverages and food to have a cosy time in the water :) Enjoy your time in Iceland !
