Myrdalsjokull

by Skibbe

This was one of my favorite sites on the trip. We actually went to a tongue of the glacier Myrdalsjokull and got to walk around it for a while. It was the kind of thing I wanted to see in Iceland, something different from what I had seen before. This was part of Reykjavik Excursions South Shore Adventure tour and has the option to rent crampons and walk on the ice.

Iceland claims to have the world's oldest continuous legislative body, started here in 930 as the Althing. Here, Icelanders met once a year to resolve disputes with a little partying and dueling thrown in. It continued This is also the site of a rift valley that marks the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is a stop on the Golden Circle tour and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Geysir

by Skibbe

This is the location of the first known geyser so it is where the term comes from. That geyser, over 10,000 years old, erupts infrequently now but the nearby Strokkur ("The Churn") goes off with eruptions less than seven minutes apart-sometimes only seconds apart. There are several other geysers and hot pools in the immediate vicinity. This is also part of the Golden Circle tour.

Gullfoss

Meaning "Golden Falls", this is a stop on the Golden Circle tour. The falls are very powerful and beautiful. Luckily, the Icelanders resisted efforts in the 20th century to harness them for hydroelectric power.

Skalholt

This was the seat of the church in Iceland from 1056 to 1785. It is in a beautiful green setting and has some interesting church relics in the basement. This is often the first stop on the Golden Circle tour.

Hallgrimskirja, Reykjavik

by Skibbe

This is one of the city's best known landmarks, a very modern and unusual looking church. Construction on it started in 1945 and was finished in 1986. To me, it still smelled new. You can go up in the tower for great views of the city. There is also a statue of Leif Ericsson in front that was donated by the U.S. government in 1930. This was taken as an admission that the native of Iceland did beat Columbus to America, which wasn't accepted by everyone before then.

Tjornin, Reykjavik

Reykjavik is a lovely little city (about 200,000 population) and this lake in the center of it is a big part of why. I liked city out here and enjoying the ducks and the view, even at midnight since I was there in the summer.

Parliament Building (Althingi), Reykjavik

by Skibbe

As someone who works in government, I tend to look for the the main government buildings whenever I visit a new country. The Icelandic Parliament building is very different from what I'm used to seeing. There is no security around it that I could see and very little activity (I went when they were not in session). In back is a peaceful garden where you can sit at any time of the day. I read a book there one day as I waited for my plane.

The Blue Lagoon - the scenic view.

by Regina1965

There is a lovely view from the roof of the restaurants at the Blue Lagoon. You pass the restaurants and go through the doors which lead you to outside stairs and from the roof of the restaurant there is a really lovely scenic view of the lagoon, the mountains and the lava. The Blue lagoon is really amazing as it is lava all around you, making it fairy tale like, in my opinion. On the ground floor there is a The Blue Lagoon shop which sells all of their products. The Blue Lagoon products can also be bought on-line on their website. Some of the Asian visitors have bought hundreds of silica mud-masks and sell them at home as a "Forever young mask". The store also sells various other stuff, including clothes and lovely boots, an Icelandic design, some of the boots are made out of fish-skin which is becoming increasingly popular and one can buy purses as well made out of fish-skin in their...

Akureyri - the capital of North-Iceland.

by Regina1965

Akureyri is situated in North-east Iceland and is the capital of North-Iceland with a population around 17.300, making it the second largest city in Iceland after the Greater Reykjavík area. It is a beautiful city with a lot of character, situated in one of the longest fjords in Iceland, Eyjafjörður, surrounded by high mountains and only 60 km away from the Arctic circle.I always love visiting Akureyri and it brings back good childhood memories. It is a small city but it has it all, a cinema, hospital, busy main street with cosy little shops, a botanical garden, a lot of hotels and guesthouses, the beautiful Akureyri church, a lot of lovely museums, an excellent geothermal swimming pool with 2 small waterfalls under which you can sit and relax, a mall, it just has this magical touch - for me at least :-) Notice the red light on the traffic-ligths in Akureyri, it is in the shape of a...
