Dimmuborgir

by margaretvn

Dimmuborgir or Dark castle is an amazing place really and the walk through it is fascinating. There are in fact several walks of different lengths. There is a car park and all the walks start there. Dimmuborgir is made of high lava formations with some fantastic forms and the walks wind their way through these formations. To protect the delicate flora please stay on the paths though. There are postcards with a person standing in the most famous formation - The Hole - be to do that you would have to wander across delicate flowering ground. The Hole is a circle hole in a very high pile of lava. Dimmuborgir is actually part of a larger lava field probably formed 2000 years ago by eruptions of volcanos with the wonderful names Ludentarborgir and Prengslaborgir. By Dimmuborgir the lava created a sort of lake but when some of the lava flowed away the rest formed a maze with really strange...

Reykjahlid

by margaretvn

While exploring Myvatn take a little while to see Reykjahlid, a little village on the north east of the lake. There is a tourist information centre there. There is also a great restaurant in the parking area by the hotel. Reykjahlid is the name of a farm which actually has grown to be the village. In 1729 lave from the Leirhnjukur volcano destroyed the farm but stopped just short of the little church . Actually that was because the church was on higher ground was the reason it was saved is geological. You can see the foundations of the old church and the piled up lava so close by.In Reykjahlid there is also a hotel, campings and a supermarket (with the tourist information in it).

Namaskard

by margaretvn

Hverir (also known as Namaskard) is a sulphur field right on the main road. There is a large parking area and then you are right beside the boiling mud pools and sulphur gases. The colours are wonderful and the smell is awful. The area is on the eastern side of the Namafall which is 432 metres high, at a depth of 1000 metres underground the temperatures reach 200 degress c. You can walk around the area as there paths but do be careful to stay behind the ropes around the pools - the ground is crumbly and accidents do happen. There is a footpath up the slope of the mountain and it is worth climbing. Until 1940 the sulphur was harvested here and sent to Denmark from the harbour at Husavik.

Myvatn

by margaretvn

Myvatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland and since 1974 the lake and a large part of the surroundings have been a protected nature area. Myvatn is lovely but if you are unlucky you can have terrible problems with mosquitos so do take protection with you. We were lucky and never saw or more importantly felt any. The lake is 277 metres above sea level and is surrounded by lots of volcanic reminders. The trees around the lake are little low beech and there are lots of places along the road to pull in and just sit and enjoy the view, we had picnics along the side of the road sheltered from the wind. If you like bird watching (as we do) then Myvatn is a treat because there are so many different types of duck. A good place to go is by Neslandatangi - the south west area of the lake where the Laxa river starts. If you like walking then a walk to the explosion crater Hverfjall is great - but...

Air sightseeing Iceland

by Saagar

I considered doing this as the weather was sooo beautiful, but I was low on cash and time and opted not to do it this time. However, my research uncovered at least one company that does this commercially out of Reykjavik: Eagle Air Iceland.I would ensure that the weather will be good before joining, unless there is a landing involved, so you actually can see things on the ground!!!!These were some of the alternatives:Reykjavik and surroundings, 30 mins.............. ISK 5000 pp.Westmannaeyar on a scheduled flight, I suppose, that includes guided sightseeing bybus, about 4 hrs ....ISK 15,500pp.Glaciers and volcanoes, the SW part of Iceland, the Hekla area, 1-1.5 hrs... ISK 15.500pp.Midnight sun flight 5 hrs to Grimsey island, lands there , short walk etc. ...ISK 30.000pp.Other flights include Greenland day trip, coastal tours, hostorical sites etc.50% discount for accompanied children...

Free all-Iceland guide: "Around Iceland 06" .

by Saagar

Don't think this is a trappy thing, no; this comprehensive guide to Iceland nicely complements other commercial travel guides, such as Rough Guide and LP. The "Around Iceland 06" is free of charge and you can pick it up at major places wherever tourists tend to coverge.Yes, there are ads in this 225-page handbook, but it doesn't take much space away from matter-of-fact info and hard facts about any place in Iceland - as far as I can gather.Contains some very good general advice sections as well, especially on driving on Iceland.

Whale watching

by margaretvn

We have been whale watching in several places in the world but I must say that the trip we made in Husavik is the best one we have ever done. The trip sets out from Husavik harbour into the bay and lasts three hours. Husavik calls itself the Whale watching capital of Europe and i think the name is correct, we saw so many whale on our trip. North Sailing was the first Icelandic company to offer whale watching trips and they use conbverted and restored fishing boats. They go out into the waters of Skjalfandi Bay. The personnel are so friendly and experienced. We were only out a few minutes when we saw our first whales and soon we were seeing so many. With one Humpback it was a question of "who is watching who" as he came so close to the boat and he kept coming back to us.North Sailing says it has the best record of whale spotting in Europe and I can well believe that - we saw so many. They...

WHALE WATCHING

While in Iceland, I am sure you don't want to miss the whales!!!I did it in the north - HUSAVIK. This town is the whale capital of the north. On the port you have two (or three) companies which organize tours. Try to book in advance, especially during the summer!
