Myvatn, volcanic fumes from a crack

by JLBG

The volcanic activity is high in the Myvatn area. Some of the fumes are highly aggressive, very hot and rich in sulfur dioxide. When you see fumes coming out of the soil, always beware and be cautious. You should always avoid breathing this kind of fume, that might be dangerous. If you are close to fumes, take care of the wind, it might change and blow the fumes towards you.

Myvatn, Dimmubörgir

by JLBG

Some of the lava pillars in Dimmubörgir ("Twilight Castles "), on the East side of the lake, reach 25 meters in height. They were formed from the erosion of lava beds that flowed a few thousand years ago from the eruption of the Prengslabörgir craters.

Myvatn, close up on the bugs

by JLBG

These bugs are not mosquitoes as often written. They are actually a kind of small flies. That is why they do not bight. Amazingly, in Myvatn, there are no real mosquitoes. Luck ! However they enter your mouth, nose, eyes, etc.., which makes it very umpleasant.

Myvatn, flying bugs puree !

by JLBG

Myvatn is a paradise for bird watchers but also a hell ! There are plenty of birds which feed on midge larvae but they cannot eat all of them. Thus, those that escape to the birds hunger become adult flying midges and the air is really a puree of flying bugs !

Myvatn, the mosquito lake

by JLBG

Myvatn, with its 37 km2 surface is the fourth largest lake of Iceland. A vast variety of algae grow in the lake, providing sustenance for midge larvae and crabs, both of which are important food for birds and fishes. Lake Myvatn is sufficiently large and its renewal of water sufficiently slow for its ecosystem to flourish despite its altitude of 278 meters above sea level. It is a paradise for bird watchers. Various types of ducks and other marine birds can be watched.

Tip Photo
Laxa

by JLBG

In Icelandic, lax means salmon. Laxa means salmon river, and there are several rivers of this name in Iceland, which means that there are a lot of salmon (and trouts) in Icelandic rivers. Iceland is a Mecca for salmon fishermen. To avoid any contamination, fishers material must be completely disinfected on arrival in Iceland, before passing in front of the custom.

Close-up on the bra !

by JLBG

At second sight, and as we saw the same on several occasion in Iceland, we felt that these cow really needed a bra ! They had plenty to hold and a wild guess would be that they might give 20 to 30 liters of milk each day ! However, that must be very uncomfortable for them !

Tip Photo
Bra for cow !!

by JLBG

Surprising sight ! Several cows wore bra ! That was the first time we saw this and at first sight, we wondered what disease or wound they might have caught that would need such a harnessing ! Later, on several occasions, we saw cows with the same harnessing.

Tip Photo
Extreme close-up !

by JLBG

As soon as we were out of the car, a very familiar ram came towards us. Did he want to play in the film? Or did he want to protect his flock? We will never know the full truth but it was not aggressive at all, just curious to see some humans in his kingdom!

Tip Photo
Gödafoss

by JLBG

Gödafoss is a waterfall at the mouth of Bardardalur valley in northern Iceland, on the 175 km long glacial river Skjalfandafljöt, just south of the ring-road. Gödafoss means the waterfall of the Gods. It is one of the most impressive waterfalls of the country.
