Sæból in Ingjaldssandur valley by Önundarfjörður.

by Regina1965

If you drive further on and pass Skrúður then you will reach Núpur in Dýrafjörður fjord (see my hotel tip). Driving along road 624 to the very end of it you will reach Ingjaldssandur by Önundarfjörður valley. The drive will take you 12% up a mountain on a small gravel road. The first time I went there we drove into the clouds so it was pretty scary. But on the other end of the mountain a beautiful valley opens up - Ingjaldssandur. This is what I call remote here in Iceland and this is where my grandmother was born. I went there on a family reunion in the summer of 2010. Ca 100 people used to live and work in the valley in the early 20th century, but now only a handful of people live there. There is a lovely small church here and a social club called Vonaland. There people from the neighbouring villages and farms meet at Sandaball during Verslunarmannahelgin, the first weekend in August,...

Advice to Forum member with 4 days, 2 kids + a car

by AuTourDuMonde32

My daughter's 5 and she was born in Iceland. She loves the pools of course.. Laugardalslaug right in the center of the city with plenty of parking is a great one.. tons of shallow spots, toys, slide and good soaks for the adults. Also worth a stop on the way back in to town from a trip is the pool in Arbaer (Arbaejarlaug).. great view.. and it's set up really nicely for kids with little more personal pools and cool spraying stations; also a slide and a great view of the city.In the same park as Laugardalslaug is the Reykjavik Zoo.. which is kind of cool for the kids, though unremarkable. Also in the city, is Perlan on the hill in the city. It's a nice over-look on top and there's a cool park around it with some vents close to the car park.Down the otherside of that hill is the BEACH. I know, not what you'd expect.. but it's not bad!Roped in swimming.. July is warm enough.. and there are...

Reykjavik - the capital

by smirnofforiginal

Reykjavik is the perfect place to start one's travels in and around Iceland. Only 50km from the international airport, with many major sights easily reached onday trips and with a multitude of tour operators and activities available, it is, for the tourist, an easy and perfectly located city.Reykjavik is a small city set against the icy blue sea and the snowy mountains. It is full of charm and friendly people. (Half the population live in Reykjavik!). It is a clean and well kept capital with prices the same as the rest of Iceland = expensive!a glass of wine cost me £6 and a small fridge magnet of a troll also cost me £6!

Þingvellir National Park in South-Iceland.

by Regina1965

Now this is one of my favourite places in Iceland and I go here often as it is close to the capital. Þingvellir National Park is situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the American and Eurasian continents, making it a very special tourist attraction and for us Icelanders this is the holiest place in Iceland and one of the places we visit the most. The tectonic plates are actually visible here, in earlier days the rift where the plates meet used to be a lot more shallow, but has sunk more and more over the years and it is said that the Vikings might not even recognise Almannagjá rift anymore. There used to be a hotel here but sadly it burnt down on July 10, 2009.The tectonic plates drift apart about 2 cm each year.Þingvellir is the only place in the world which has been recognized by UNESCO as a cultural site connected to the Viking culture. The oldest...

Höfn in Hornafjörður.

by Regina1965

Höfn is a fishery town with ca 1.800 inhabitants off ring-road 1, the last town in SE-Iceland before you travel the ring-road in the mountains of the East-fjords "Austfirðir". It is known as The Lobster town of Iceland and helds a Lobster festival in the first weekend in July. Don't miss the Glacier exhibition where you can touch and experience the glacier while learning all about glaciers. In the same building there is a tourist information office. From Höfn you see parts of Vatnajökull (with different names) and the Atlantic ocean which makes for a fantastic view on a sunny day.See my tip on the campground at Höfn here Camping at HöfnThere is a tunnel on ring-road 1 which takes you from Höfn up to the East-fjords "Austfirðir", before that one had to drive up the mountain to get to the other side. Much easier this way, I must say. Here is a webcam in Höfn.

Þorvaldseyri farm after the volcanic eruption.

by Regina1965

There is a big farm in South-Iceland in an area we call "Undir Eyjafjöllum" or beneath the Eyjafjöll mountains. It got hit very hard by the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, so hard that the farmers there Páll Eggertsson, and Ólafur Eggert Pálsson, a father and son and their families, decided they couldn't live there anymore, especially as there was a small baby on the farm, and decided to move. It was on the news and the nation was sad watching these hard-working farmers leave their farm. Then to everyone's surprise the crop grew at a double speed due to the ash so when the eruption stopped there was a lot of crop. The farmers returned - and then there was a flood almost ruining everything. But the farmers stood firm and now their farmland is blossoming - see my photos. The farmers have put a vessel filled with ash by the road by the farm so that people can see the ash that was...

Halldor Laxness Museum

by shawnT

Even If you are not an avid reader or are not particularly interested in Islandic Literature, I STILL recommend this. The museum is the 'home' of Nobel prize winner Halldor Laxness. This charming home has been converted to a musem and has been preserved just as it was when the author lived here. The house is filled with unique art, a grand piano, his extensive bookshelves and windows with beautiful views of pastures and mountains. The tour only takes about 30 minutes and is audio guided ( many different languages are available). Be sure to check the website for seasonal hours and the museum is closed on Mondays. This was my favorite museum in Iceland ! If you are a reader, I recommend reading his book titled " The Fish can Sing". It was so fun to have read the book then tour the house and see the exact things he wrote about ! Especially the Grandfather clock in the entryway :). A bigger...

Ljósafoss hydropower station.

by Regina1965

Ljósafoss hydropower station went on-line in 1937 and harnesses the river Sog in Grímsnes in South-Iceland. It was harnessed to provide Reykjavík with electricity. Along the river Sog there are 3 hydropower stations, Írafoss, Ljósafoss and Steingrímsstöð hydropower-stations (see my photos of these stations) and they are among the oldest hydropower-stations in Iceland. They were renovated in 1999, i.e. the structure and equipment, and are believed to be able to operate for decades to come. After the renovation Ljósafoss station put up an exhibition and educational facility and welcomes visitors during the summer time and admission is free. Ljósafoss station is open from June to August, Monday to Friday 13-17 and Saturday and Sunday 13-18. Do pay them a visit while driving in this area.On an average 20 people are working in these 3 stations. As you drive along road 36 the first station you...

Geysir

by pure1942

Geysir is another one of the highlights on most people's trip to Iceland. The thousand year old area of Geysir is located at the foot of the Bjarnfell and is dotted with hot springs from which bubbles and splurts boiling water heated below the earthe's surface and bursting and bubbling up through cracks and pools all over the area. The most famous of all geysers and from which they all take their name is the famous 'Geysir' which erupts water over seventy metres high. However, this geyser is very unpredictable and visitors should consider themselves very lucky if they ever see this geyser erupt. A better bet is the nearby geyser 'Strokkur' which erupts every 4 minutes or so and can shoot water thirty or forty metres high. Watch out for the distinct blue coloured dome which forms just before the geysir erupts. See my photos for each stage of the eruption. A geyser contains water which is...

Ásbyrgi-The Jökulsárgljúfur National Park

by Redang

This is a fantastic site not to be missed, at least from my point of view. This is a 3,5 kms. long canyon with walls up to 100 metres high. In the middle of it, "The Island" (Eyjan), a freestanding rock (second pic).It is said (the mythology actually), that Wodan/Odin the pagan god, was riding his eight legged horse (Sleipnir), and it put one leg to create that hoof.Back in Ásbyrgi, there are two possibilities: Take road #864 to Dettifoss (bad gravel road) or drive back a bit along road #85, the one we drove from Húsavík, and then, on the left, road #F862 to Dettifoss too but along the other bank of the Jökulsá river (F### means just for 4x4 vehicles).I took the second option, but don't worry, I did visit Dettifoss; another must of Iceland.
