 | Iceland Transportation | Tips 41 - 50 of 166 | | There is a regular aiportbus corresponding with the arrivals at Keflavik Int. airport. Unfortunately the staff is not willing to help you finding the most convenient stop- so that u avoid the extra taxi ride from the bus station to your hotel. THEY DO DRIVE YOU TO YOUR DOOR IF YOU STAY IN ONE OF THE BIG HOTELS, so just check in advance if your choice of accomodation is close to such a hotel... We enjoyed going around in this small and typical fishing-tourist boats looking for whales and trying to fish something. Theme: Ship/Boat

Upon arrival in Iceland at Keflavik Airport, there are 2 main ways for the tourist to get into Reykjavik. One would be to catch a taxi....but this would cost the equivalent of around 80-100 pounds!! The other and much cheaper option is to catch the Flybus. The Flybus connects with all arriving flights, no matter how late - we arrived around 11.30pm, and there was a bus waiting for our flight. It departs from just outside the arrivals terminal. When we were there the cost was 1,150 Kroner each (around 10 pounds) and the trip took between 35-50 mins - we bought a ticket aboard the bus. The bus goes straight from the airport to the BSI (Bus Terminal) in the centre of Reykjavik. From here, if you are staying at one of the major hotels or guest houses you can then board a smaller bus and be dropped off at the door. If, like us, you are staying in private accommodation, you can either walk or catch a taxi from the bus terminal - nothing is too far away. To catch the bus back to the airport, there is a set timetable (see website). You can purchase a ticket inside the bus station. Leave a Comment

One of the most sympathetic things I discovered in Iceland is that chauffeurs are not in a hurry and don't 'push' pedestrians. In fact, when they see you want to cross the road, they slow down from a large distance and stop completely at some 10 to 20 metres or so. That makes you feel quite safe. There is only 1 main domestic airlines - Air Iceland. (There are some private airlines, but they cater more for tours) Flight are available between the 2 main cities Reykjavik and Akureyri to other major towns on the island. The flights aren't cheap but if you are fighting for time, it's the best option. There are also many tours which incorporated flights using Air Iceland from Reykjavik and Akureyri. You can book these tours while you are in the cities. It is cheaper thisaway than trying to do so independently. Leave a Comment

Iceland fiords are getting more and more ``assaulted`` by huge cruise ships that deliver thousands of tourists around the most reknown areas. Theme: Ship/Boat

We wanted to drive around the whole island in early Spring, negotiating icy roads and blizzards - the only way we could do that was by 4WD! And boy did the 4WD come in handy, almost getting stuck on at least two occasions where a conventional car would have been stuck fast! We ended up with a monster Landcruiser due to a mix up with the booking which we didn't have to pay extra for! When hiring a car in Iceland you have to consider that it is a very expensive proposition, however help is at hand in the fact that diesel prices are half that of petrol compared to the fact that diesel costs more than petrol here in the UK - so that represents a HUGE saving if you are going to travel more than 2,000kms like we did! In Iceland all cars are fitted with metal spikes inside the tyres which without snowchains are essential when driving on icy roads which we did for much of the time as we were caught in an unseasonal blizzard from the North Pole (that is not far away in Iceland!). Add to that long periods of near zero visibility as strong winds blew the snow off the mountains across our roads, snowdrifts and plunging temperatures - it was quite a ordeal just to get around! We saw quite a few cars that had run off the road and a couple of accidents on one day and apart from the one occasion where I chose a snowdrift to drive into instead of off a cliff when we momentarily skidded on ice we managed to get around with little incident to ourselves - and it was FUN! Our day-tour to Thingviller was on a jeep. The weather was so bad that we were 6 or 7 tourists in total so the guide came to pick us up with the jeep. Sure, different fromt the usual bus and gets you more into the wild and natural icelandic atmosphere. Theme: Car/Motor Home
