Whale Watching

by bpwillet

If you go whale watching this is the type of vessle you will most likely be on. They are fast moving boats with plenty of deck space and a nice lower deck area with tables and benches. It can get cold out on the water so bring with you what you think you will need. They are sturdy enough that there is no need to worry about sea-sickness or anything but they do have toilets or the railing just in case.

Biking around

by bpwillet

Renting or brining your bicycle to Iceland is a great way to get around and could be quite an adventure. Many bus companies can accomodate groups who are biking cross country if needed and there are great rides along the ring road or even into the interior if you would want to. It is definitely a great way to get around Iceland and see everything on your own. There are several places in Reykjavik you could rent bikes if you didn't bring your own, some of the best resources would your hotel staff possibly. Try Reykjavik Travel Service (Laekjargata 2) or Borgarhjol SF (Hverfisgata 50).

Renting...

by bpwillet

A great way to explore Iceland is to hire/rent your own car. Many car companies around large cities are available to rent to you any type of car that you may require. If you are staying mainly to the ring road than a regular 2WD car will suit you just fine. Be aware that the roads are not in the best shape in some areas. 4WD vehicles can also be rented but sometimes they come with minimum occupant requirements. We were lucky to get a Golf for the bargain price of 7900IKr per day. Luckily it was only 1 day. There is a car rental place just across from the BSI Bus terminal and various others have offices in Reykjavik. You can also talk with a few rental representatives at Keflavik airport.

Going glacial

by bpwillet

I don't know exaclty what to call these things. It is almost a cross between the A-Team and Bigfoot. They are the type of vehicle that is perfect for the interior and like the name suggests, going on glaciers. Super Jeeps are available to rent and used on tours. You can also rent and include on tours snowmobiles, dogsleds or even skis.

Low Cost....

by bpwillet

Iceland Express is a great alternative to the Icelandair ezperience. Especially if you are coming from mainland Europe with Iceland as your final destination. They offer affordable and cheaper airfares from some of their main European hubs. I used them from London, Stansted. It was convenient and very affordable. Changes can be made for only 20GBP

To and from Keflavik Airport

by bpwillet

The FLYBUS from Reykjavik Excusions is the best way to get to and from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik. The trip lasts about 40min. Tickets are 1100IKr per person and will take you directly from the Arrivals to the BSI bus terminal. Not all the buses look like the one pictured but they are all offering the same service. Some hotels are listed on their route but you should make sure it is if you want them to drop you off at your hotel. Some places are close enough to walk from the Bus terminal. Once again there are no reserved seats, and if you haven't bought your ticket in advance, some drivers will not let you on. But you do not need a ticket to load your luggage.

Bussing around

by bpwillet

The BSI (sometimes pronounced Bee-Ess-EE) bus terminal is the best place in Reykjavik to begin travelling. It will provide you with many different companies who use the local bus services to get you from Reykjavik or wherever you may be going. Some of the larger bus companies are Austurleid and SBA-Nordurleid. Many of the tour companies will use these or their own types of transportation. But they are the best means and most cost effective means to get around Iceland. The terminal is located on Vatnsmyrarvegi 10 in Reykjavik.Austurleid - 545-1717; www.austurleid.isSBA -550-0770; www.sba.is

Amphibious Boats

by bpwillet

If you visit Jokulsarlon you will definitely want to take a trip on one of the amphibious boats they have. They tour is about 1 1/2-2hours and costs 2000IKr. It is amazing to go past such huge blocks of ice so close. These are subsequently the same boats used in the first "Tomb Raider" movie when they were in "Siberia".

4WD needed

by JLBG

If you want to drive off the main circular road, you need a 4WD. Most of the tracks are quite rugged, sometimes directly a lava bed, sometimes rocky, sometimes sandy. Most of the trails have numerous fords. At mid July, it can be difficult to pass some of them, as snow is still melting and the water high. The end of July or the beginning of August are the best time to visit the center of Iceland, though the days have already shorten.

Getting to Reykjavik from the Airport

by SJ11

Well this is also an tourist trap, hard to belive in Iceland, obviously the taxi drivers are over charging people up t0 10.000 ISK for the Taxi from Keflavik airport to Reykjavik, well there are 2 taxi stations, and 1 charges you 7.500 ISK while the other chargest you 9,500 ISK not under any circumstances pay more, if they want to charge you more tell them f**k off... but then I just recommend the FLYBUS takes a little bit longer, drops you off at all major hotels in Reykjavik and only costs 1,100ISK :-) Notice do not buy the tours from this company, I take a look at my next tip to see wich one to go with :-)
