Amphibious Vehicle!

by sue_stone

One of the quirkiest methods of transport I have been on was the amphibious vehicle that we had a ride on in Iceland!!When we visited the glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon we decided to take the boat ride on the lagoon. This was not in any ordinary boat - instead in an amphibious (wheeled) boat.We boarded the vehicle on dry land and then it drove along a gravel road for a couple of hundred metres, before plunging into the lagoon. It was very strange as the car/boat entered the water. For a moment I held my breathe....waiting for the water to start coming in or for it to sink....but it didn't. The engine continued to run, and instead of driving we were motoring through the lagoon, dodging icebergs and looking for seals! At one stage a second amphibious vehicle pulled up next to us on the lagoon, its wheels showing above the water line - bizarre.I think every home should have one!!

Hertz and Kynnisferðir

by Inga78

I recomend that people take a Hertz rental car if they want to do things on theyr own pace. Now if you want to take a bus you should definetly use Kynnisferðir they have many years of experience and know what theyr dooing. You can expect to be maybe a littlebit late beeing picked up in the summer time since it´s high season and it´s mad at the main office but we don´t forgett our customers. They come first without them we don´t have anything! Hertz sells guided tour cd´s to use around the island and they are 1500ISK each. They are very helpfull and give good information about the places you are visiting. go to Hertz.is or kynnisferdir.is and check out what´s on in Iceland!

Hire a 4WD!

by M0B1US

We wanted to drive around the whole island in early Spring, negotiating icy roads and blizzards - the only way we could do that was by 4WD!And boy did the 4WD come in handy, almost getting stuck on at least two occasions where a conventional car would have been stuck fast!We ended up with a monster Landcruiser due to a mix up with the booking which we didn't have to pay extra for! When hiring a car in Iceland you have to consider that it is a very expensive proposition, however help is at hand in the fact that diesel prices are half that of petrol compared to the fact that diesel costs more than petrol here in the UK - so that represents a HUGE saving if you are going to travel more than 2,000kms like we did!In Iceland all cars are fitted with metal spikes inside the tyres which without snowchains are essential when driving on icy roads which we did for much of the time as we were caught...

The ferry to Vestmannaeyjar islands.

by Regina1965

The ferry to Vestmannaeyjar, The Westman islands has been having a lot of problems since a new harbour opened up on the 21st of July 2010. Then Herjólfur, the ferry, left for its first trip from Landeyjarhöfn and stopped sailing from Þorlákshöfn. The trip used to take 3 hours from Þorlákshöfn, but from the new Landeyjarhöfn it only takes 35 minutes. Now there has been a problem with the Landeyjarhöfn sailing almost from the first day and one almost never knows if Herjólfur will be sailing from Landeyjarhöfn or Þorlákshöfn. From the very first day Herjólfur has been sailing from Þorlákshöfn in 25% of the trips to and from Vestmannaeyjar. So if you book a trip beforehand and pay only ISK 1.000 for the 35 minutes' trip from Landeyjarhöfn, and that harbour will be closed, then you will be charged additional ISK 1.660 for the 3 hour trip to Þorlákshöfn.The problem with Landeyjarhöfn harbour is...

Buses to/from the Airport

by cdr1985

Buses meet each flight as they arrive at Keflavik airport. You can buy your ticket in the terimnal building. If you pay a little extra the bus will drop you directly outside your hotel. It is also possible to arrange to be picked up from your hotel and taken back to the airport. Most hotels can organise this, but if for some reason they can't, just go on the Reykjavik excursions website and you can book there.A return bus with hotel drop off/pick up is 4500 isk

Driving the "F" Roads

by GrumpyDiver

On our first trip to Iceland, we rented a "regular" car and found out that there were a number of roads, especially through the interior that were designated as "F" roads that were restricted to 4x4 vehicles.Yes they are rough and bumpy, but we can also find them here in Canada. The main reason is that there are no bridges across the rivers. You need the 4 wheel drive and height clearance to cross them. The car rental companies nicely remind you that you are on your own when crossing rivers. Insurance does not cover this activity.

Iceland Rental Car Scam (this one was from Hertz)

by acanadianabroad

If you rent a car, be really careful about where you drive. I rented with Hertz, and they drew on a map a suggested route. One month later I had a $1442 fine on my card for driving on a road that was banned in the small print, a road that they suggested! They refused to respond to emails or voice mails and it wasn't until two months later when I reported the charge as fraud to Visa that I actually found out what the charge was for.I wrote it up in more detail if anyone's interested - http://companiestobecarefulof.blogspot.com/2009/11/car-rental-in-iceland-beware-hertz.html.But don't let that discourage you! Iceland is incredibly beautiful, and the ring road is perfect for a road trip. Just be really careful with the fine print, and be especially careful if you rent from Hertz!
