Keflavik Airport: Keep your eyes on the board!

by garridogal

I flew to and from Paris via Iceland's Keflavik Airport and spent around an hour there each way. It's modern and has fairly large shopping area/food court outside the gates. Within the gate area I waited in, there was a snack bar, gift shop with a large assortment of nice items including some lovely Icelandic knits and a duty-free shop where you can buy alcohol in every sized bottle imaginable! In short, it's a really nice airport. However, on both of my flights I noticed that my flights were never announced over a loud-speaker. Only the final boarding-calls were announced. Is this normal? I'm not sure but I thought I'd post it for other travellers. Keep your eyes on the board so you'll know when your flight is boarding.And.... if you fly there in the Spring, be sure to check out all the beautiful lupine growing around the runways!

Security on entering Iceland

by GrumpyDiver

Beware of things in your hand luggage when you enter Iceland from a non-EU country. It's like going through airport security and they confiscate things that you bought behind security at the airport you departed from like containers with more than 100 ml / 3 oz of liquids.

Iceland Express

by Insideman

For traveling to Iceland, I would recomend you Iceland Express (if you are traveling from Europe). I flew with this company from Berlin, Schönfeld and everything was fine. Flight was in Reykjavik on time and the return ticket cost only 350 EUR. It is a cheaper alternative to Iceland Air. They also have new destinations from Central Europe - Krakow, Warsaw and from Italy - Bolognes.

Planning Itinerary...consider Air Iceland!

by jumpingnorman

People spend just a few days in iceland most of the time - sometimes hiring a car and going around on their own.But also remember that Air Iceland has great flights that can be done on one day for travel to Northern Iceland (Akeuryri) where I was able to see the amazing Godafoss Falls, Lava rocks and craters and then I saw a Blue Whale in the afternoon and then back to Reykajavik at 7PM. My flight left Reykjavik at 715 AM and I paid about US$250 for the whole trip (please see my pages)...And then, if you really want to be daring, and easire flight for $420 is going to GREENLAND! The plane left for Kulusuk, Greenland at 10 AM and then I was back in reykjavik at 6 PM -- but I got to see wonderful Kulusuk and watch a drum dance, kayaking and just be one of the few people in the world to have reached this town of only 300 people! This was a great deal!!!They have amazing destinations which...

Iceland Air: NEW route Reykjavik-Seattle!

by jumpingnorman

Those in Seattle should rejoice! Iceland Air has promised to have a direct route to Reykjavik which I think will start next July 22 2009 (as in their magazine, June 2009 which I am reading now). Imagine that – 4 flights a week MWFSat, departing Seattle at 1530 and then in Iceland at 0645! Amazing….From the map to USA, looks like it has direct services to NY, Boston, Toronto, MN, Halifax and Orlando Sanford (in North America). Of course in Europe, they have a lot.Right now, I took the flight from NY JFK at 2035 and then arriving at Iceland 0630 (I am still in the plane). But I do like this plane of Icelandair that I am in right now – it even has a nice port for electricity for my laptop. Although us Americans don’t ride Iceland Air as often, this company has been making international flights since 1945, and annually they have 1.6M passengers (I am one of them now).I booked all of my...

Dollar Rental Car

by shawnT

Just to let you know, Dollar rental car is the only rental company NOT at the airport. There was no one to pick us up or no shuttle in sight. I asked the car rental counter and they had no idea where Dollar was. Finally a very nice person at the counter called from my reservation sheet, and then someone picked us up within about 15 minutes. At the end of the trip, I went to return the car, and no one was there. It was a real hassle using Dollar there.oh ........and be sure to test the CD player before you drive off. We planned to listen to some great music while on our roadtrip. But , it wasnt working!! It would have been so nice to have classical music playing while looking at the beautiful scenery in Iceland.

Keflavik Airport

by DueSer

If you arrive into Iceland by plane this is where you'll be. Keflavik Airport is on a peninsula about 30-40 minutes west of Reykjavik. How to get from the airport into Reykjavik is easy - Reykjavik Excursions operates the flugrútan or flybus. They have very comfortable buses leaving the airport bound for the Reykjavik bus terminal that leave the airport about half an hour after the arrival of a flight. It costs about $15 US and the best part is that you can buy your tickets online before you ever arrive in Iceland. To go back to the airport, they have buses leaving every 20 minutes or so from the bus terminal. The terminal is located near the Reykjavik domestic airport and it is a moderate walk or very short bus or cab ride to the main hotels and guesthouses of Reykjavik.Keflavik airport itself is very nice. There is an interesting rainbow sculpture out front and beautiful stained glass...

Bus Tours

by pure1942

For a lot of people the idea of taking a guided bus tour makes them cringe and to a certain extent I'm not a huge fan either, but because of the hazards of driving and limited public transport in Iceland (outside the Reykjavik area), Bus Tours are often a better option to get to some of the best that Iceland has to offer. There is a huge variety of organised tours available to choose from and most are very well organised and good value for money. The tours include pick-up and drop off to your hotel/guest house and are guided. The buses are comfortable and clean and the guides are ffriendly and knowledgable. There can be large differnces in the prices offered by tour companies and it pays to shop around especially if paying with euro as at the moment (November 2008) the Kroner has fallen steeply and the euro will get you a lot more than it used to. Some companies have not adjucted their...

Driving in Iceland

by pure1942

Renting a car and exploring Iceland's amazing landscapes independently has its definite advantages in that you control where you go, when you go and for how long you do it.However renting a car in Iceland has its own considerations. It is easy to rent a car even though it is expensive in comparisson to other countries. However, due to the conditions of many of Iceland's roads and its unpredictable weather, driving in Iceland can be hazardous, frustrating and downright dangerous. Iceland has just one main road - Route 1 - which runs in a ring around the entire country and is really the only road which is hassle free to travel on. Many of the other roads, especially away from the south-west corner and greater Reykjavik area, can be frustrating to navigate especially in bad weather when many of them are rendered impassable. The interior of the country is virtually off limits to normal cars...

Flying to Iceland

by pure1942

There aren't many options for people wishing to fly to Iceland from Europe, at least not cheaply. Iceland Air, Iceland Express all have direct flights to Keflavik Airport (about an hour from Reykjavik) but fares can be quite expensive. Iceland Air fly from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Paris.Iceland Express fly from London, Warsaw, Friedrichshafen, Copenhagen, Berlin and Alicante to Keflavik. From Ireland there are no scheduled direct flights to Iceland but Wallace Travel in Dublin arrange package trips to Iceland including flights (charter), transfers and hotel. (Prices around €550.)
