Getting Around Iceland By Air

by xuessium

There is only 1 main domestic airlines - Air Iceland. (There are some private airlines, but they cater more for tours) Flight are available between the 2 main cities Reykjavik and Akureyri to other major towns on the island. The flights aren't cheap but if you are fighting for time, it's the best option. There are also many tours which incorporated flights using Air Iceland from Reykjavik and Akureyri. You can book these tours while you are in the cities. It is cheaper thisaway than trying to do so independently.

Jeep tours

by isolina_it

Our day-tour to Thingviller was on a jeep. The weather was so bad that we were 6 or 7 tourists in total so the guide came to pick us up with the jeep. Sure, different fromt the usual bus and gets you more into the wild and natural icelandic atmosphere.

Bus trips

by isolina_it

We explored Iceland on an organized bus trip. It was quite easy and fun also because it was a small group. It is true that a bus trip doesn`t make you free to stop whenever you want but it also assures a nice sightseeing of everything you requested and is planned for. We also got a nice guide pretty flexible to stop at individual requests and arrange pic-nics in cosy sheltered natural places.

Taxi service is also available to/from the airport. Flybus fare: ISK 1000, Taxi fare ca. ISK 8500

4x4

by zweiblumen

To get around Iceland and specifically to get around the highlands of Iceland a 4x4 vehicle is an essential. The big blue Unimog here in the photo was not built to intimidate drivers of other vehicles (although it often did!) but it is big and chunky for a purpose. It has massive ground clearance because the roads in the highlands are little more than dirt tracks. Sometimes there is no road and sometimes a river needs to be forded. Even Icelandic buses need to be chunky all wheel drive vehicles capable of crossing rivers if they take people into the interior of the country.

Keflavik International Airport- Flybus

by dharmabum222

All international flights come in here and then you have to make your way to points outside Keflavik. To get to Rekyavik you can rent a car like we did or take a taxi which is quite expensive (approx 8000-10000 ISK) or take the Flybus (approx 1000-1500 ISK) to your hotel. Most people seem to take the bus so their info is below.

Innanlandsflug- Rekyavik's Domestic Airport

by dharmabum222

Many people do not realize that you cannot take an international flight directly in to Rekyavik, you must fly in to Keflavik and either rent a car or take the flybus to Rekyavik, a 40 minute or so trip. Rekyavik's domestic airport is reserved for trip inside of Iceland or to the Westman or Faroe Islands or Greenland.

Flugfelag airline to the Westman Islands

by dharmabum222

We knew that we wanted to get to the Westman Island and weighed the options between the ferry from porsmork or a flight from Rekyavik. We decided on the 23 minute flight as we wanted to see the island in no more than one day and the ferry is 3 hours itself after getting to porsmork. The man at the desk at the Salvation Army hostel booked our flight for us on the Flugfelag airline website and we left Rekyavik domestic airport at 7:35 am and returned at 5:30 pm...perfect! The cost of the flight was $180 USD round trip, less than we spent on drinks each later that night!

Rent a car through kemwel!

by dharmabum222

We rented a car through www.kemwel.com and were told that we got the best deal around. Another VTer from REkyavik thought the deal sounded too good to be true...but it was true! Car rental is quite expensive in Iceland just like everything else but after figuring the cost difference between renting a car for 10 days with unlimited km and the amount of bus tickets/taxis we would need to pay for the same trip, there was no contest. We paid $600 USD (approx for 39000 ISK) for a Nissan Micra for 10 days with all VAT tax included and unlimited km/miles of which we drove 1398 miles!

Icelandair

by dharmabum222

Icelandair is working hard to become a discount airline flying from the mainland of Europe and the US to Iceland...in fact rumor has it that they are positioning themselves to be a discount airline from the US to points all over Europe with stops in Keflavik Iceland. The plane from the US was small and crowded with mediocre food but the flight back was larger and more roomy with better food. Overall, a great price for a great destination and they are adding locations everyday!
