Flying to Iceland

by sue_stone

Iceland has 2 airlines, both with flights from London (and other cities). Iceland Express (http://www.icelandexpress.com/), the 'budget' option, with flights between London and Reykjavik and Copenhagen, and Iceland Air (http://www.icelandair.co.uk/), the official carrier of Iceland, with flights from London, other European Cities and North America. We were lucky enough to get a cheap fair with Iceland Air, flying from London Heathrow airport, which is the closest and most convenient airport to us. Flying time from London to Reykjavik was 2.5 - 3 hours. One great thing about flying with Iceland Air was that there was no queues at check-in - at either end - which helped to make the airport experience a happy one.The Iceland Air staff wore funky retro style uniforms. They were very friendly and the flight was relaxing and food edible. Soft drinks were free of charge, but you had to pay for...

Car hire in Iceland

by sue_stone

The easiest way to see the sites in Iceland is by hiring a car. Ok, so car hire in Iceland is amongst the dearest in Europe...but it gives you the flexibility to visit all the amazing sights at your pace. (Though of course, there are plenty of bus tours you can go on that cover many of these sights)Due to local contacts, we found affordable car rental through AG Car Rental. We hired a small Daewoo Kalos, perfect for the two of us, though meant that we had to stick to the main roads - but the "main" sights were easily accessible. If you hire a (much more expensive) 4WD you can visit all those real off the beaten track places. Our car was delivered to us at our apartment in Reykjavik at a pre-agreed time and then collected again as arranged. The car was clean and the service friendly. If you are going to hire a car, make sure you do some research so that you understand all the road signs....

Fly Bus

by lenoreva

Reykjavik Excursions runs a flybus from the international Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik which takes about 40 min and costs 1150 Kr. per person. This is the easiest way to get to Reykjavik from the airport if you aren't renting a car as they meet every arriving flight and no advance planning is required. They only drop off at hotels or BSI bus station (in central Reykjavik) but they misunderstood us so we ended up getting dropped off near our guesthouse. You can also combine this with a tour of the Blue Lagoon, but if you want to do this, try booking in advance with Iceland excursions (www.allrahanda.is) as it is cheaper and has better departure times.

Airport Shuttle Bus to your hotel

by Puckfair

When u get off the Airplane at Keflavik airport and after collecting your luggagethe easiest /no hassle way of getting to your hotel is to get the Airport shuttle, it is in the main reception area of the Airportin a small kiosk, u can tell them where /what hotel u are staying at and they will advise u of the fare, u can chose single or return, we chose return and we didnt have to advise them again when to collect us the morning we were going back to the airport, they were very efficientit took as far as i can remember about 30 min to get from the airport to our hotel across the Lava fields

By plane. Is the most easiest....

by Maralaat

By plane. Is the most easiest. It could be quite exciting because of the windsituation in Iceland. There is quite windy at times, and that's why they have several directions as options to land with the plane. I would recommend you to rent a big 4X4 car and drive around the attractions of this beautyful land.

IcelandExpress or Icelandair?

by stfan

We have two big airlines:One is the low cost airline IcelandExpress.com which flies daily from London Stanstead airport in England as well as copenhagen airport. The prices are most often low but they are still high. Check prices at Icelandair.com before booking because they might be lower. The other is our main airliner Icelandair. They fly from and to many places around the globe. Usually good service but prices can be high but are usually lower then most of the bigger airlines like British airways or SAS.Comparison:Flight from Reykjavik to London over one weekend.Icelandair: Price: 26790 krIncluded:Flight both waysFood on board + drinksTaxesIcelandexpress:Price: 19.900Included:Flight both waysTaxesOf course prices change and you can find cheaper flights at Icelandair. Always double check before you book at both places!

The Road system - Being improved!

We are constantly making Iceland a better place for our tourists as well as a better place to live in. Thats why we are working on our roads. Most of the big roads are being doubled in size and traffic jams are a daily problem nowadays in Iceland. Please be patiened while we are improving our country and making it a better place for you and be careful!

Buses

by stfan

We have very good bus system and we are currently improving it. Here are some tips. The ticket costs for adult person 220 kronurs. If you need to use them often why not buy discount cards. We have two cards that you can use whenever you want and as many times as you want. They are expensive though but they can save you around 50% so concider them if you are staying for long time. Green card (graena kortid): Valid for one month. Use it whenever you want. Cost: 4500 krs. 20 rides with the bus costs 4400 kr so if you need to use the bus more then that then buy the card!Red card (rauda kortid): Valid for three months. Use as you want. Cost: 10.500. 47 rides with the bus will cost you 10340 krs so if you need to use the buses more often then that then buy the card.Routes:Most comman routes are the 150 and 140.140 - Goes from Hafnarfjordur city center to Reykjavik city center every 20 minutes...
