  • Hiking up Grænagil canyon - part 2.

The next part of the hike after leaving the vast lava field opens up the view to Brennisteinsalda, a beautiful rhyolite mountain. From the lava field there is maybe a 10 minutes walk up to the mountain. On the way you will see the glittering rocks of volcanic glass - obsidian. The rocks are so big and they glisten in the sun, it is just amazing....

  • Arriving at Landmannalaugar.

Now we finally arrived at Landmannalaugar. There is a river to cross, but in July 2012 it had not rained much and we were experiencing a draught, so there was not much water the river. But that can change in a matter of hours, so to speak. The river can get so voluminous that it gets out of hand. So a lot of people leave their cars on the parking...

  • The route from Þjórsárdalur to...

I decided on going there on a guided tour with Reykjavik Excursions to see what their tour is like. People have been asking me which excursions they should choose, and it is difficult to give advice without having tried this service myself. So in 2012 I did two guided excursions, to Landmannalaugar and the excursion Jewels of the North with SBA...

  • Hnausapollur lake - A crater filled with...

The next stop we made on our way to Landmannalaugar was at a crater filled with water. There are quite a few craters like this in Iceland, with lakes in the crater. We stopped so close to the edge of the crater, and it was so windy that I did not feel comfortable there, at all. What I had wanted to do was to stop at Ljótipollur crater, which is the...

  • Hiking up Grænagil canyon.

Part 1. I divide my tips on this hike into 4 parts as there is so much to see here. There is a fantastic hike in Landmannalaugar, which I highly recommend. That is the hike through Grænagil canyon, the canyon between Mt. Blàhnjùkur and Laugahraun lava field. It is a ca 2 hour hike through fantastic terrain. The hike starts to the left of the...

  • Completing the circle from...

On the way back from Landmannalaugar we made 3 stops, the first stop was a 10 minutes stop by Frostastaðavatn lake just as you leave Landmannalaugar. It is a lovely lake, and the most popular lake for fishing in this area. It is filled with Arctic char.We took a different road back the F225 (Landmannaleið), which is in a much better condition than...

  • Hiking up Grænugil canyon. - part 4.

We now hiked back upto Laugahraun lava field with beautiful glissening volcanic glass rocks - obsidian. The lava was just glissening where ever one looked, it was amazing. This part of the hike was really easy and so beautiful, as one is so close to the rhyolite mountains in every direction. The mountains closest to the path are called Suðurnàmur....

  • Bathing in a natural geothermal spring.

There is a very popular hot geothermal spring in Landmannalaugar. People usually go for a hike and then relax in the warm natural geothermal water in Landmannalaugar. There are showers where one can shower and change clothes before bathing in the geothermal spring. Then one has to walk, wrapped in a towel, on the timber path leading to the...

  • Hiking up Grænagil canyon - part 3.

This part of the hike starts from the beautiful rhyolite Brennisteinsalda mountain and the mud pool. From here are fantastic photo opportunities. Take a right turn and go down the hill. The road is now much wider, but here one will also meet a lot of people going on the Laugavegur hike. So I preferred going off the path and walking on the lava...

  • Highland road conditions during the...

The roads F26 (Sprengisandsleið), F208 (Fjallabaksleið Nyðri) and F225 (Landmannaleið) are only open in July and August, they are impassable in the winter time. And when it is as dry as in the summer of 2012 then the road becomes like a washing board. So it is uncomfortable driving there and one has to drive slowly. Road F26 is paved most of the...

  • The campsite - camping on rocks.

There is a campsite in Landmannalaugar, but seeing that it is very hard ground here and rocky, there is no way to use tent pegs here. So rocks are used instead to keep the tent up.By the campsite there are kegs filled with rocks for that purpose. There are usually a lot of tents there. And they are for sure all occupied by tourists. If Icelanders...
