When you are driving along the south-west-coast of Ireland and are heading from Killarney or Trallee to the north, you might get the feeling that the only way to reach the Burren is via Limerick, driving along the river Shannon.
In case that you are in a hurry, there is also an interesting carferry-connection between the villages of Tarbert in the north of County Kerry and Killimer in the south of County Clare.
Instead of driving 137 extra km ( 85 miles )you simply have to wait a few minutes for the ferry, pay around 13 Euros one way for cars and small motorhomes and take a ferry-ride of around 20 minutes. This makes sense, when you want to get from Co.Kerry to the Burren and places like Kilkee, Kilfenora,Milltown Malbay or Ennistimon and the Burren.

Inishmoore and also the other Aran islands are really worth a visit, while staying in the Burren and there are several ways how to get there :
1) By plane is certainly the best way to get to Inismore and when you are lucky you will be able to take some great photographs of the island and Fort Aengus from above. The fare for such a 30 minutes flight is 45 Euros for the return-ticket.In 1995 I had been to the small airport of Spiddal, but I did not reserve in advance and a large tourbus had occupied all flights that were available for that day and so I decided to take the ferry again. A reservation for the flight is highly recommended, also for the Aer Arann Islands shuttle-bus taking you from Galway city to Spiddal. That bus starts at Kinlay House Hostel, on Merchants Road which is just off Eyre Sqare.

2) The ferry from Doolin - that is a fullday-trip to Innishmoore and it starts next to the large campingsite of Doolin

3) The ferry from Rossaveal: It starts in a small village about 25km west of Galway city and just a few km north of Inishmore, so THIS ferry is certainly the best deal for everybody who is afraid of heavy seas and sea-sickness. Their high-speed- boats also have bigger capacity than the ferry from Doolin and they are operated all year long ! They provide a large car-park in Rossaveal and you have to pay a fee to park your car there ! Drivingtime from Galway-City to Rossaveal is about 1 hour and the return-ticket on the ferry is 25 Euros.

If you are cycling around the Burren, you don't need to carry your luggage around with you. West Ireland Cycling can transport your luggage to your various accommodations so that you don't have to.
