Fort Aengus is the main attraction of Inismore by globetrott, 3 more photos When on vacation in Doolin, dont miss to take the ferry-boat to the Aran-Islands and see the main attraction of Innismore : Fort Aengus is a pre-historic castle or maybe a ring-fort built by several circles of stonewalls, BUT the ring is not complete, as the ring is "open" towards the sea and the high cliffs at the backside.Be careful, when walking around inside of Fort Aengus, these cliffs do not have a fence and will fall down about 100 meters. There seems to be a small entrance-fee today, during my visits it was free of charge. You need to be able to climb a bit and walk on a ground of loose rocks and stones, not really a good place to walk with elderly people or small children !! Here you may find a few links for Innismore and the other Aran islands: www.visitaranislands.com www.aranislandsdirect.com Leave a Comment

feck off by sourbugger If you are a fan of the surreal comedy series “Father Ted” then you will already have some kind of introduction to the area around here. Although made by a British company, and for a while banned in Ireland, the series became hugely popular. The use of the word ‘Feck’ was perhaps the shows most enduring legacy and the creation of the nightmare-priest character Father Jack. He Spent his retirement in an armchair in the Craggy Island Parochial house saying very little apart from “Feck” “Girls” “Nuns” “Drink” “Gobshite” and in one memorable episode “That would be an ecumenical matter”. If you can get hold of a video, do. If not, at least have a look at the website www.feck.com. For afficionados of the series, use the website to find out where you can visit the filming locations. Craggy Island itself (with the ariel shots at beginning of the show) is the smallest of the Aran islands., Inis oirr. Other locations include the Parochial house in Clare, along with the Ailwee caves (see other tip)and the cliffs of Mohar. Leave a Comment

There are no trains to Doolin, so if you end up there, you probably meant to. The best "off the beaten track" thing I can come up with is to visit Inishere. It's a good thirty minute ferry ride from Doolin's pier, but well worth it. Leave a Comment

You can visit the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher by walking up the road a few miles to it, however I recommend walking along the side of them. If you talk to the locals, they will tell you where you can find the goat's path along the edge of the cliffs - a relatively dangerous but intensely beautiful and breathtaking journey. When I went, I met no other travellers, allowing myself time for reflection and awe. Electric fences and mud puddles aside, I have had few more rewarding experiences during my travels thus far.
