Feakle Things to Do

In 2003 I attended the Feakle Music Festival, a five day traditional instrument workshop in rural Feakle, County Clare. This area is the home of such IrTrad greats as Martin Hayes and Mary MacNamera.

Instrument workshops were available for many different instruments during this festival. The workshops lasted three hours per day. They cost as follows: 20 Euro per day; 30 for two days; 40 for three days. I attended the concertina class with Mary MacNamera, and it was amazing. The class had roughly 10-12 people in it each day, of various levels of ability. We learned about six tunes through the course of the week (actually learned, not just covered and forgot), and Mary was very patient with beginners such as myself.

According to the website, the 2004 festival dates are 5th - 9th August. Go!! But you'll need to find transportation, as Bus Eireann rarely goes to Feakle. I was fortunate in that I accidentally met up with a friend of mine in Galway who was heading to the same festival, and he had already arranged a lift with a local!
