We were flying British Airways. They flew us in to Heathrow where we had to catch a connecting flight on their partner Aer Lingus to Shannon. Most of the flights into Shannon appear to be those of Ryan Air, but in addition to Aer Lingus there are flights of American, Aviajet, Air Transat, Continental, Eurocypria. First Choice and Spanair Warning Note: Aer Lingus charges for food and drink on their flights. If you want anything to eat or drink, you will have to pay for it. I asked for a wheelchair. Shannon Airport has wheelchairs available free of charge for use within the airport. However, there are no people to push the wheelchairs - my grandson got to push. We went through the nothing to declare line, and then went to get our bags. Now it is not really possible for one person to push a wheelchair and pull two roller bags. We managed to get out to the money exchange window and bought some Euros before we called a taxi to take us to our hotel. Leave a Comment

Bunratty Castle on N18 less than 10 minutes away! by elmendorfs The Shannon airport is the perfect destination for a holiday in West Clare or the southern part of Ireland. It's big enough to have good flight choices, and easy access to cars for hire, but small enough to minimize the inconveniences. And as a bonus, when we traveled the fares were less than to Dublin. Copy and paste the following link into your browser address: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=shannon+airport+ireland&sll=52.695945,-8.921585&sspn=0.160212,0.389328&ie=UTF8&ll=52.695945,-8.921413&spn=0.080106,0.194664&t=h&z=12&om=1

Easter rising Limerick by Ludders Roads are easy to travel about. Shannon isnt a main town its an airport. Limerick is 15 mins away, cliffs of Moher is 30 mins and banratty is on the way into limerick. we wished we'd spent more time in Ennis 20 mins from airport. Tipperary isnt worth a visit at all! its 30 mins out of limerick. Spend time at Lahinch by the cliffs of Moher Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

The obvious way to get to Shannon is the Airport. One thing to consider is shopping at the duty-free shop on the way home. Rather than carry Waterford crystal all over Ireland, buy it as you leave! Save the shipping charges (which bring the cost up to sale prices in the States and you pay the same price all over Ireland for Waterford!) No hassle with VAT refunds - no charges for rebating your VAT! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Downtown Limerick by RickinDutch Thought I was ready for driving on the left side. Have relatives in the UK and had driven there a bit, but always with automatic. I drive a manual tranny here in Alaska so I thought - why not?. Our first driving trip in Ireland, we started with a manual and ended up switching to an automatic after 3 days as we left Limerick and headed up to Galway. I found the coordination required from shifting with the "wrong" hand was too much in addition to all the other left side thinking that I had to do. After a near miss at a roundabout in Limerick, looking the wrong way for merging traffic, and then shifting wrong and stalling, my wife swore if we didn't switch out we could just spend all 2 weeks in Limerick. With the automatic, I relaxed considerably and actually could take in the scenery. Cost an extra 12 euros a day but probably worth it. My wife never fully relaxed as passenger on the left side, however. Roads are narrow and folks drive way faster than seems reasonable. Plus she had a control issue - in the driver's seat with no steering wheel or pedals. And yes - I did ask her to drive but she declined :) Been back since and alway rent an automatic. It's cheaper to make the arrangement when you book rather than switching later on. And don't judge the rest of Ireland's roads by the highway out of Shannon. I'm told, and haven't seen anything yet to contradict it, that short stretch is the nicest road in Ireland. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Me with the taxi lady and the luggage trolley by grandmaR, 4 more photos Because we got into Shannon late in the day, the shuttle bus transportation to the Bunratty Castle Hotel was no longer available. So we had to call a cab. There is a desk in the airport (photo 2) where you can talk to a person who will do this for you. There were no cabs lined up outside the airport at a taxi stand - just a sign saying "Taxi Desk Located In Arrivals Hall" (photo 4). The taxi when it came was an ordinary car with just a photo ID inside (photo 5) showing that the driver was a taxi driver. The rate to Bunratty Castle Hotel was €20 Current Fares are: Rate per kilometre €1.30 Rate per mile €2.09 A minimum charge of €7 will apply to all journeys. The website has a list of fares for other places. Leave a Comment

by sabsi FERRY From Co. Kerry (Tarbert) to Co. Clare (Killimer) you can cross the Shannon by ferry. It is a perfect quick way to go along the west coast - without having to go to the traffic chaos in Limerick! It costs 10 IEP, boats go every hour! Leave a Comment Theme: Other
