The name Bunratty, Bun Raite (or possibly, Bun na Raite) in Irish, means the 'bottom' or end of the 'Ratty' river. This river, alongside the castle, flows into the nearby Shannon estuary.
Bunratty Castle is now a very popular tourist attraction, due in a large part to the proximity of the airport. The interior has been furnished with tapestries and artifacts from various eras in the castle's history. Some of the sights include the 'great hall', dungeons and four towers with spiral stairwells. Medieval-style banquets are held twice every evening in the great hall.
Alongside the castle is a reconstructions of historical cottages and buildings, recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street. Old tools, furniture and artefacts are displayed, with the village kept alive by some inhabited shops, an old home bakery and peat fires in cottages.

    Bunratty behind Durty Nellie's

Castle on the River Shannon is well-preserved. A folk-park is maintained in the surrounding grounds. Next door is Durty Nellie's Pub, a good place for lunch. Make reservations for the Medieval dinner at the castle. You get a great meal with entertainment of music and song. Across the road there are interesting tourist shops.

placed between Shannon and Limmerick .
One of the main attraction of the region .

It has a great parc , where they have reconstructed a small village of the former days . It is worth a visit.

The CASTLE is also used for GREAT BANKETTS with IRISH FOLK AND TYPICAL IRISH MUSIC .
But you may book it . I d ont know the PRICE , Sorry .

Very nicely restored castle, surprisingly close to N18 near the Shannon airport. You can explore most of the castle via narrow spiral stairways. The garden, village around the castle is worth your time as well... Historic value is high and commercialism is minimal, we enjoyed it very much.

    The McCanns at dinner

Enjoy a large banquet of grainy bread, soup, stew, meat, mead/wine. Eat with a knife, only; but later they give you a fork. Dinner entertainment includes medieval-costumed singers, comedic actors and a virtuoso violinist! Fun interaction with audience members.

I know that it sounds hokey, but this is actually a lot of fun. The folks there go to a bunch of trouble to treat everyone like they are actual honored guests in the home of the local lord 500 years ago. What a treat for anyone who reads or enjoys history from this period.

It is very convenient (almost on top of N18 near Shannon airport), reasonably priced, fun to explore, self-paced (we did not join a tour), includes a "village" of interesting (although somewhat similar) buildings, and a delightful tea shop for a bit of a rest after climbing the castle steps and walking the village. I was pleasantly surprised at how many rooms were accessible and how unobtrusive the staff were.

Bunratty ... go back in time

by Ludders Updated Jun 4, 2005 76 reviews

Great for the family, good price of 27 euros for a family of four. easy to find on the main road between limerick and the airport. Five mins from the travelodge. Esay to pass four hours looking into all the houses of poor labourers to rich gentry. Great street scene and decent traditional pub on site 3.85 euros for 1 pint of guiness.

    Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle was AMAZING! It was so huge; anyones dream home (if Castles are your style). We toured almost every room in the Castle, including the Earls bedroom, which is said to be haunted!
