READING - WORKSHOPS - SEMINARS - CHILDREN'S EVENTS - EXHIBITIONS - MUSIC

Held in Bantry every year, this is a wonderful festival, the little town is absolutely bursting with literary activity, people, authors, poets and artists. This festival is usually held the last week of June but for 2007 the date is set for July from the 8th till the 13th.
The activities usually include, Readings from authors, which are held in the local library at lunch time and some of the evenings. These readings are free and everyone is welcome to attend.
There are a good variety of Seminars and Workshops for budding writers, or poets.
Last year (2006) there was also the start of a Fringe Film Festival - films with an Irish literary context, in the local cinema, running as part of the Literary Festival.
One of the highlights of the festival is the launch of the Fish Anthology (see) www.fishpublishing.com
This years (2007)authors coming to give talks at the Library will be: Kevin Myers, Carlo Gebler, John Boyne (Boy in the striped Pyjamas!), Michael Collins, Claire Kilroy & Mia Gallagher, Rita Ann Higgins & Greg Delanty, John Lanchester, and last but not least Tim Severin. There will be poetry reading and music by Colm O Rianin & Pireeni Sundaralingam. As well as all these activities at the Library there will be more authors giving readings in other places in the town, among these will be Eoin McNamee, Harry Clifton, Jeanette Winterson, Kevin Barry, and others. The atmosphere in Bantry could not be better during this week. For more info on the activities see the website: www.westcorkliteraryfestival.ie

The Squire where the Market takes place

On a sunny day this can be a most enjoying activity, you just chill out, walk around, perhaps purchase something fun or you might find some real old Irish utensil, there is no knowing what you will find or pick up and that includes kitten, ducks or puppy dogs! You also get the flavour of the local people and the local characters, a friendly and fun atmosphere is all around. When you get tired you can go to a pub for a pint, even sit outside, or you can go for coffee and for food. Summer is the best time for this market as obviously it is nicer on a warm sunny day.
The first Friday of the month gets the biggest Market but it is also held on every Friday.

Visit to Bantry House

This is a wonderful large house set in beautiful gardens overlooking the famous Bantry Bay, and it also has the Armada museum in on its lands.
It also has a lovely coffee shop but that is sometimes closed to the public.

There really are very little in the way of interesting attractions to visit in this area, For me I much prefer to take in the breathtaking scenery that abounds you in this remote part of the country.

I loved going on this trip as it was on the ocean on a very hot day. It was from Bantry harbour to a neighbouring island called Widdy Island. I would reccommend this to anyone
