There's only one way to get to Cobh using public transport and that's by train. Trains leave Kent Station in Cork at least every hour ( a little less frequently on Sundays) and the cost is just EUR5.10 for a return trip. The train is a little like a toy train, only three or four carriages long and generally there is a festive air about the whole trip. Cobh is actually an island so getting there is a lot of fun, especially if you have children with you. For a short part of the trip the railway line is surrounded on all sides by water and for the rest of the trip there are lovely estuary views across to Monkstownand passage West. Before entering Cobh the line passes by the old abandoned Verolme Shipyard where abandoned cranes dominate the skyline. I reminds me of approaching Gdansk by train- different scale obviously but the whole crane against the sky thing is very striking.
Once in Cobh, the railway station is just a stones throw away fro the centre and is of course right next door to the Heritage Centre.
You can get to Cobh by train, transferring at the station in Cork. When i went i had a friend pick me up at the station in Cork so we drove in. Cobh is on a small island in the Cork harbour, connected by bridges and causeways.
Cobh is a nice town, but the streets head straight up from the harbour so there are a few steep hills to climb, be warned!
Two and a half to three million departed the Cobh for a better life (usually) and many of them got to the port by train.
When mail from America landed at the port, it was soon rushed onto trains and onward to Britain.
It is therefore not suprising that the railway link was very important in it's time, with buildings to match.
These days it is little more than a forgotten corner of the network, but there is still a very useful service between Cork and Cobh which is great for tourists.
Trains depart roughly every hour throughout the day.
Cork is linked to Cobh by an hourly train service.. Trains start in Cork at Kent Station and also stop at Fota. Travelling time to Cobh is around 25 minutes.
The commuter afre applies on that route, regardless of destination you pay 5,00 EUR vor a single ride and 7,70 EUR for a day return ticket (as of early 2013).
